Hi Fountain Pen Network,

Longtime fountain pen and stationery fan. I have been obsessed with pens and stationery since I was a child due to my dad (an accountant). The first pen I remember using was my dad's Parker 51. Ever since then, I have been crazy over fountain pens. I look forward to chatting with everyone on this network!!

Welcome! I am also a fancier, although I think of myself as a stationery hoarder, since I don't write enough letters any more.

Welcome! I can relate to your childhood experience as I got my obsession with stationery and fountain pens from my (accountant) father, who also owned 3 Parker 51 fountain pens.

Welcome !

This is my late Dad's Parker 51 set, purchased around 1954. He was an accountant, as well. I was forbidden to use it. I got caught half the time. Mom gave it to me because I am best suited to care for it. In 1960, I bought by own fountain pen, a Sheaffer cartridge pen, on a blister card. With two cartridges, the price was 79¢. (There ! I am duly "dated")

Is your father's Parker 51 still in the family ?

Greetings from Pittsburgh! :W2FPN:

You're lucky -- you had fountain pens in your family growing up -- and a 51 at that! (I'm totally jealous....) My parents were confirmed ballpoint users and my mom typed everything (including personal letters) as well. At one point, I remember having what in retrospect was probably a combo pen/pencil. It had belonged to my grandfather, and my mother couldn't understand my fascination with it -- she remembered fountain pens as being messy and troublesome (but I'm now thinking that, since both my parents grew up during the Depression, they may never have had anything but third or fourth tier junkers....

I usually suggest that new people click on the "View New Content" button. at the top of the page, when they log in: that gets them a good overview of a range of topics. And to also have a look at the pinned Index to the Ink Reviews Forum. But be aware that we are all shameless enablers here, and will happily help you spend your discretionary budget on pens, inks, paper, repair tools, etc.... I speak from experience: 5-1/2 years ago I had never heard of Parker 51s, and now I have *8* of them (5 Aerometric models and 3 51 Vacs); plus a 51 Special, a 21 and a 41.... And that's not counting the Vacumatics, the Vectors, a couple of Laidtone Duofolds, a couple of Parkettes, a Challenger.... And I have OTHER pen brands as well....

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
