Help... I Made Some Fountain Pens Using A..... Kit

Pen kits get a pretty bad rap in my opinion. Yes the custom pens from scratch have much more customization and time put into them, but the kit pens (at least the high end ones) are about the closest thing to jewelry as you can get. Complete with Rhodium Plating 22kt gold highlights and even a Swarovski crystal in the clip. So I made a few and I think they turned out pretty good. 2 of them are made from Tru Stone which makes a unique pen even more unique in my opinion. Tru Stone won't take a thread, its too brittle. So the ONLY way to use this material is on either a kit or by making your own kit. It really is a cool material. Its heavy and shiny and makes a showstopper of a pen. All of these pens are cartridge converter fill. All are available at www.jandjwooddesigns.net .

I would love to hear what everyone thinks of them... both good and bad.

I think they're pretty cool, but most of them too feminine looking for my taste, except for the darker one. I love the shape, their nibs are really nice looking. I would prefer to see a gold plated section (section that holds the feed and the nib) rather than a chrome like section, I think it would look better with the gold part of the nib.

Some of the blanks are really beautiful. But the clips and trim often detract from the overall impression, IMO. I like the clip and trim on the dark colored pen (fourth from the top) the best, because it's not as "bling-y" as on the others.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I like them all, but I like the one in the third picture the best. Just seems (to my eye) to have the most harmonious design. But I am also a sucker for blues and greens, so...naturally I like that one best.

They're all beautiful!

+1 for this. But I don't like the metal grips anyway, so that kills them for me. :(

Like Chrissy, I don't like the longer metal sections (well, metal sections period). But I do like the other aspects of the pen. Are there no other choices for the sections than metal?

Like farmkiti, I too love turquoise, blues, and greens. Having said that.... the clip on the turquoise is too glitzy for my taste. I'm also wondering about the dimensions? The body looks a bit short. What are the measurements with the cap on, off, and posted?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
