8 Leather Pen Cases

mchenart

Recommended Posts

I really like the look and feel of leather accessories for my pens, and have collected a few in the past years. Here is a group portrait of cases made by Opus 88, Tibaldi, Jl Bessetto, Oscarmaschera, Montblanc, Pilot Somes, Storio and Pelikan. While the big ones are obviously to be used at home, the smaller ones can be carried around when travelling.

Can't see the page. Got the stupid "Photobucket" icon thing instead when I clicked on the link. (Clearly you haven't been following any of the threads complaining about the new Photobucket "*retroactively* pay to repost" policy.... :().

I only discovered this change in the morning when I tried to link my photo to this thread. So instead of loading my picture through the Image icon, I pasted the Photobucket photo page . I can open the link on my computer, but obviously other third party viewers cannot view it. It is very sad that a great deal of precious contents here will be lost for ever unless we protest strong enough.

This is my first Imgur upload. Hope it works.

It works quite well.

Do you have pictures of the cases open?

I am curios as to the lining and internal construction of the cases.

Thank you for posting.

Amongst all the cases, where does the Pilot Somes sit in terms of quality and usability?

BTW, Photobucket is a script bloated, rule ridden, spy-on-you mess. It's better to stay away from them.

The orange coloured Pilot Somes case is super sturdy and well constructed, one that I use all the time. From Somes' literature, they use thick and high quality leather throughout that would recall Hermes' tradition of making saddles and equestrian accessories. The lid opens up to reveal two layers for storing five pens each, and each tray is lined with the same supple leather in the same colour. Actually, you can turn the top lid over to use it as a 'presentation' tray. I will try to photograph the cases opened so you can see how the interiors are like.

I take it that means it's not one of your favourite picture hosting services then. :D

Could you please identify the top left, bottom left, and bottom right cases?

I should have identified the cases. OK, here they are, with the number of pens they accommodate in brackets. Back roll: Opus 88 (4), Pilot Somes (10) , MB (2). Front roll: Tibaldi (3), Jl Bessetto (5), Oscarmaschera (one large compartment), Storio (3) and Pelikan (2).

Thanks for the information! I've never seen a Pelikan case like that, is it an older model? Do you happen to know its model name or number?

The model number is PB1, and seems to be a rare model. I couldn't find any of it on the Bay.

I found the Pelikan PB-1 2-Pen Case for sale on the Web. I have only seen these PB-1 cases in Japan and Singapore, and I would not be surprised if the Singapore example was a leak from Japan. Maybe Pelikan's owners in Malaysia are contracting a Japanese leather products manufacturer (like Somes perhaps?) to make these cases for the regional market. Here are the links:

All your cases look luxurious and practical but I especially admired and coveted a pilot soames case for some while :)

The JL Besseto 5 pen case is beautiful.

Thank you for sharing.

My apology, fountainpagan, I misspelt the name of the case- it should be Jl Bussetto. I bought it at Kingdom Note, Tokyo. The workmanship with leather is just fantastic, because it seems like there are no seams in the case; it is just so well made. Similarly, the MB case was also made so that the seams are well hidden or polished out.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
