Question

I have made more than a few ink mixtures, and am very happy with most of them. I have notice something, however, many, if not most of my mixtures have turned out to be either a brown or a purple. Strange. Your thoughts? C. S.

At least partly that's because brown and purple are a mixture of colors, while red and blue are pure colors.

Someone around here (probably Sandy1) explained it to us as Additive v. Subtractive Color Mixing.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Yes, that's why a CMYK mixing kit needs to use relatively low saturation inks, because each ink you add, reduces how much light is being reflected (subtracted), and so the mix looks duller.

Hi,

As mentioned by dcwaites, it is difficult to match the Chroma, (snap/vibrancy Wiki http://munsell.com/color-blog/difference-chroma-saturation/), of another ink in a blend.

One can get a blend where the CMY+K densitometer read-out gets ever so close to the original, but the blend just won't have the same charisma. Such is the nature of working with dyes.

If an ink blend (from a chroma test) contains only one or two dyes, then I think it's sometimes possible to replicate it by using two single dye inks. ;)

question: I never tried it, but is it recommendable to mix inks from different manufacturers? also, permanent inks with non-permanent inks?

Different manufacturers that use dyes and water: Yes. :) They might even be made by the same end manufacturer in many cases. :D

Permanent and non-permanent: I would not. A permanent ink is usually not water-based. Only mix water-based inks with other water-based inks, permanent inks with permanent inks and IG inks with IG inks for safety. :)

Fingers crossed! :)

An OffTopic aside: I wonder why the Platinum Mix-Free inks didn't catch the attention of the MixMaster market segment? Or is it thriving behind locked doors????

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
