Sheaffer With Bad Nib Creep/leaking

Hello!

I have a vintage Sheaffer Balance, that I semi-recently replaced the sac on. It was my first sac replacement but everything seemed to go really well.

However since then I've noticed that my pen seems to have a bad nib creep/leaking issue that it didn't have before. I don't mind nib creep normally, but this is bad enough that the ink eventually accumulates enough in the cap that covers the nib section and occasionally onto the grip too.

I would love any input on what might be going wrong, if it's something I as an amateur could fix, or if I'm better off sending it to a pro. If the latter, I would love suggestions on who would be a good person to send it to to get it repaired.

Thank you!

Could be that when you replaced the sac you didn't get the seal onto the nipple completely secure. An air leak would cause this, and also result in ink leaking into the barrel. It might be worth checking that this is not the case.

Also, did you remove the nib/feed? This could happen if you did this and didn't re-seat them properly and they're loose in the section.

I haven't ever removed the nib/feed section since it was functional and I didn't want to accidentally break it.

I don't have any ink leaking into the barrel so it's probably not a sac air leak?

Thanks for the help!

I ended up doing just this, and he did a great job! Turns out the feed had gotten broken somehow. With the replacement he put in, it works better than ever!

I have noticed more than once that in lever fill and even button fill pens if the nib is not heat set the pen would exhibit a variety of problems.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
