Greetings From Maryland

New here in town. If you're wondering, "Hey, you're from Maryland! Did you manage to check out the DC Pen Show just over a week ago?" You're darn tootin' I did! It was a visual feast. I had no idea what I was looking at or what to ask or say to anyone, but it was stimulating and inspiring nonetheless.

Anyway, I had a fountain pen when I was in my early teen years, a very long time ago, and it just seemed like now was the time to cultivate a new interest. I like things that combine craft, aesthetics, and function. So, yeah, I like mechanical watches also, and I even saw some nice ones at the pen show (UN 1846 original model with Romans, IWC UTC 3251).

Since the pen show I've been in sponge mode, which means I've already started learning a lot and plotting my path. I have created a little starter kit of two Pilot Metropolitans, F and M, a couple of Rhodia dot pads (yes, Virginia, paper makes a big difference!), and I already have a short wish list of pens I'm trying to be patient about attacking. My mind is reeling from it all and I am, frankly, quite distracted and infatuated in this early courting phase. But aside from the pens, and inks, and papers, and accessories, what struck me so positively from the show and then reading articles and watching videos was the passion that you all have for both enjoying and sharing all things FP. I'm looking forward to joining in. Thanks!

Ink 'em if you got 'em!

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell. What part of the Old Line State do you hang out in?

Welcome aboard, from Charleston, SC. As a newbie, you might look at the Reference Pages on a website called Richard's Pens: it has a wealth of info about the basics of fountain pens, their use and care, and it will help you avoid making some mistakes. Goulet Pen Company and Jetpens websites also have useful tutorials and reference areas that can be helpful,in the beginning. Enjoy!

Thanks, Mike. Great suggestions, and they've already found their way into my bookmarks.

Welcome !

I think the Pilot Metropolitan is an excellent writing experience. Recommend it to any beginner. Veteran fp users will find their way to a Metropolitan without my words. If they had been around in college days (class of '71), I might have used one for four years, instead of a Parker 45.

Soooooooo, what's on that "wish list"? And, which part of Maryland ?

I'm just outside of DC in Montgomery County. Bethesda/Chevy Chase, Rockville.

My wish list is rather category based, and mostly well-known models with nothing exotic yet. For a classy and more formal touch I'm smitten with the Sailor 1911 Large in black/gold. That gold nib is a killer looker. For a very affordable way into a piston filler along with the added feature of a demonstrator (and fun with different ink colors), I'm thinking of a TWSBI 580 clear. Then, I like the Lamy 2000 for the engineering/design and for a break from the screw caps. Another one I have my eye on is the latest version of the Parker Duofold Big Red. I'm not sure why it commands such a high price or if I'd even go for it, but I really like the look, especially the engraving on the side of the barrel. I'm a bit at risk because I suffer from collect-itis, so I need to be careful :D

Welcome!

You have two excellent pens stores near you, The Pen Boutique in Montgomery Mall, and Bertram's Inkwell in Rockville.

Judging by your user name and Avatar, you like aircraft. The Andrews AFB open house and airshow is in May and the Flying Circus in Bealeton, VA http://flyingcircusairshow.com/index.htm is fun to attend.

Yep, I've been to both shops and will be going back soon on an ink quest.

I do have an interest in WWII planes, particularly the B-17. Haven't been to either airshow, but maybe one of these days.

Nice looking cat, there!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
