Looking For A Dark Dark Maroon/black With Red Undertones

My coworker loves the color red but at work we are only allowed to use black or blue ink. Her Birthday is coming up and I came up with the idea of finding an ink that is black with red undertones. I had did a search and I saw the 1670 Anniversary Perle Noire that was black was red hues but I cannot find it for sale anywhere. Is this color no longer available?

Would it be possible then to mix inks and make my own to gift to her? Like take a black and mix in a red that would would add a shimmer or hints of red when writing?

Thanks for all the help. So novice at all this.

J. Herbin Perle Noir, I would call it a real black, with no other tones.

In the 1670 line I can only think of the Rouge Hematite, which is a lot, but definetely not black.

The darkest 1670 is Stormy Grey, which is not red at all... :-)

Caroube de Chypre is an amazing color, it is quit dark, and you could say it has some reds, but if I read the requirements of the company I do not think it is a good choice, so I guess you will not find the right one at J. Herbin.

The one immediately thought about:

Noodler's Red-Black

More Maroon like:

KWZ Maroon

DeAtramentis Ebony

Good luck!

Caution on mixing. I was trying to get a similar black with a hint of red.

But when I mixed, Red + Black = BROWN :(

Hi,

Hmmm

Not to discount the suggestions of other Members:

Nothing comes to mind, so I'd conjure a blend.

Diamine Damson seems a good point of departure, then add a whisper of Diamine Black ink.

Slinky Linky https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/255652-tips-for-a-beginning-mixer/?p=2824580

As noted by my dear ac12, blending with inks labeled as 'Black' may give unexpected results - Black isn't really Black, but a composite of dye/s that pose as Black.

So perhaps running with an iron-gall ink as a base and warming it can do the trick. I did some trials to 'Put the Blue Back in Blue-Black' so if the IG base ink is warm, then there lies another avenue of pursuit. (I do loove IG inks) Thanks to Member Jan2016 to help us navigate!

Bye,

Thanks all for the suggestions. I will look at these and see. The anniversary ink I had seen was on a palette image. I had did a search for the 1670 inks and saw it listed with a few different colors. Not sure if that makes a difference... it's starting to sound like it was a one off color.

Bookbinder' Red Belly Black is a thick black that has a (somewhat elusive) red sheen. I had a problem with it drying almost instantaneously in the nib if left un-capped for more than a couple seconds though.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

In a wet enough pen, many inks look black. I have a pen in which J Herbin Poussiere de Lune looks decidedly black; in a dry pen, it is obviously a burgundy color.

KWZ IG Red #3 lays down a bright red line, but then oxidizes to a near black. It's an iron gall ink ,so just don't leave it unused in a pen for weeks on end, otherwise proper pen maintence is all that's necessary.

FP Ink Orphanage-Is an ink not working with your pens, not the color you're looking for, is never to see the light of day again?!! If this is you, and the ink is in fine condition otherwise, don't dump it down the sink, or throw it into the trash, send it to me (payment can be negotiated), and I will provide it a nice safe home with love, and a decent meal of paper! Please PM me!For Sale: TBA

What comes to my mind is Noodler's Proctor's Ledge.

This was my thought as well. I think Goldspot may have a bottle or two left, but if you want it, you'd better grab it.

The ink supposedly also has some sort of UV/glowing trick to it, but I have not unlocked it yet.

Another thought is DeAtramentis Aubergine, especially in a wet finer nib.

To ensure strict compliance with office policy -- red pen / black ink may be an option.

Probably the best suggestion to comply with company rule and stop trying to find a workaround.

Or else leave the company and find another place of employment that will put up with your peculiar quirk.

I haven't used it myself, but happened to wander across it while wandering the other topics in Inky Thoughts:

Birmingham Pen Company's George Westinghouse Alternator Crimson

Looks pretty darned black to me, at least in the swatch image.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China. With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters. Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed. And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments.. I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
