I saw that you made a wtb listing for the pen. What did nibs.com tell you?

They were only available with maki-e body.

I managed to get one though, but I still want the 24K version and the 100# nib.

I actually emailed Bernard Lyn, Danitrio's founder and owner, about ordering a Yokozuna with plain urushi. He said the #50 nibs were so expensive that the pens would end up being upwards of $3000 for plain urushi and he wasn't sure there was a market for it. He did say that they'd make one for me on special order. I think the price quoted was $3,500 or something (along with a 6-month or more wait time). This was like a year, year and a half ago when I spoke with him. At the time, it was a price I couldn't really afford. Maybe in a year or two though.

Btw, the #50 nibs are now made of 18kt, they discontinued the 24kt nibs.

$3500 for a 24K 50# is quite attractive. But at that price for a 18k, it's surely a very small market.

To be honest, I think the 18kt nib will probably stand up better to use over the years though. How do you feel about the Maki-e version of the Yokozuna as a writer? Does it compare to the Namiki Emperor? I'm curious about the Kubo Kohei nibs.

The BB pen was harder for me to find than the Bexley Giant. A few years ago a few of the Giant prototype colors seemed to pop up on eBay. Sadly I was short on my bids as I did not realize how rare they were at the time.

The Bexley Prometheus (the original release piston filler) used a Jowo #8 specially tuned by a Japanese nib meister. Maybe worth pursuing.

Does BB pen and Bexley Giant use the same nib with different imprint?

Got both 18K and 24K model from Kubo, and they will arrive in a few days. The price was 5x higher than a Namiki Emperor for the 24K model because I got one with full raden strips.

I don't think I will use any Maki-e pens as a daily writer, too hard for maintainence.

Thank you for keeping us updated. It would be great if you could find time to post pictures of your new pens. I am really interested to see what they look like :)

I will write a comparison review for all giant nibs.

Currently I got:

Raw Bock 8# and JoWo 8#, BBpen 12#(?), Namiki 50#, Namiki SE 50#, Pilot 14K 50#, Pilot 30#, Pilot 20# in 2 versions, Romillio 9#(arriving), KUBO 50# 18K and 24K, Pelikan M1000, Montblanc 149 and Heritage 1914, Danitrio 8#, Sailor KOP, Wahl-Eversharp Decobands in 18K(2 versions) and 14K, OMAS Casanova 8#(might be the only oversized OMAS nib).

Still missing the Newton nib though. I also ordered a KUBO 100# nib but it won't be available until next year....

Wow! What pen will the Kubo #100 nib be on? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the Kubo nibs. I'd really love to own one of those one day.

The Bexley #12 is different from the BB pen, I think. Howard Levy, Bexley's owner, told me the #12 nib was commissioned from a jeweler and the ebonite feed was made in-house at the Bexley shop. It's a big nib though, comparable to the #50 Namiki but the Namiki nib is just a tad bigger. It's in between a Bock #8 and Namiki #50 in size.

Where to get one of those giant Bexley nibs? I think they were fitted on two models?

There weren't any suitable pen bodies for the nib at the moment. And that's why I need to wait till next year to see if there're anyone capable to manufacture a pen body for that nib...

You'll have to go to the second-hand market as these pens were made like 20 years ago. I think there's several hundred floating around in various colors with the majority of them having the #12 nib -- The Giant was also offered with a #6 nib so some pens are sporting those. I got lucky and found one recently. Keep an eye on eBay -- they show up occasionally, the classifieds, or try a pen show, if you have one near you. You could also post a WTB ad.

From left: Scriptorium Aeterna with JoWo #6, Faggionato with Bock #6 modded for semi-flex, Nakaya Piccolo (though I've swapped a Platinum 3776 nib in at the moment for the nib width), Romillo Sil #9, Goldfink with Bock #8, and Bexley Giant with #12 nib.

Sorry for the blurry photo but I think you get a sense of size. Bexley #12 with a JoWo #6.

Ahh, I see. Looking forward to seeing what that nib ends up being on. Do you have measurements of what the #100 nib will be lengthwise or at the wings?

The way Bexley and BB cut the tines are very similiar.... I will post a WTB and try.

You have an impressive, rare and well curated collection and I am looking forward to hearing more about it :)

What's Kubo #100? Bigger than #50? How much bigger? Certainly interested in this.

KUBO #100= A nib that is 50% larger than a KUBO #50 in terms of nib surface area.

He only got a maki-e one at the moment. And I could not afford that....

Yes, the Bexley #12 nibs were used on the Giant model and the very rare Ultra Giant. The nib looks a bit small on the Ultra Giant though.

Montegrappa also made a very large steel nib in the 1960s for some novelty pens. Here is a link to some photos of a pen similar to the one I have:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
