Fixing Up An Aurora 88K

And I didn't mean my O ring was tight and expanded out because of the piston shaft, it is actually too big and loose. I meant that when I tighten the plastic O ring retaining nut, the O ring expands out as it should to press against the cylinder and seal the ink in. My O ring works but I would prefer a larger cross section to form a more complete seal against the inner diameter.

New info: So I was just searching the web about 14k gold markings and 585 is the marking used in jewelry to identify 14k gold so that's what the 585 refers to. As for the other bit, the mystery remains....

Still working on getting this pen where I want it but it might have been as simple as increasing the ink flow. It seems that it was quite scratchy and the nib would shave off paper and then it would clog the tip. And I couldn't write very fast or it would skip. I thought maybe the nib was not aligned or bent but as I kept increasing the ink flow, it slowly got better and better. Do these pens like a lot of ink flow? Using Noodler's Le Coleur Royale ink, if that matters....

Oh, and have only been changing ink flow with the small plastic ink flow valve inside the pen section/feed.

And no leaks from my O ring or even from the section/barrel threads which I haven't resealed yet as I'm continually taking it apart to readjust the ink flow. But it seems the threads here are fairly tight and that along with what remains of the old shellac, has kept any ink from leaking out here.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
