Pen Dimensions

Hello to all,

One dimension that I've not typically seen is the length from the top of the clip to the bottom of the pen when the pen is capped. Anything much over 5" means that the pen won't be good for shirt pocket carry.

Most of my pens, both vintage and modern, have this dimension very close to 5". Anybody else want pens that are shirt pocket friendly?

Jim

I want shirt pockets that are fountain pen friendly. It is the shirt that has to suit my fountain pens not the pen suiting the shirt.

I agree & they don't seem to be that easy to find.

I also like ebonite and most Indian pens are ball bats.

I have a Triveni Jr. & a Himalaya and they are 5" & 5.1"

Beautiful pens and the flex option is pretty darn good.

It's my feeling that it's the shirt pockets that are at fault.

They seem to be getting smaller or non-existent.

Any shirt that doesn't have at least one pocket is left at the store :(

+1. If I'm wearing a shirt without a pocket often I'll wear a jacket. Downside (besides being hotter) is I'm guessing the extra thickness of the jacket material puts stress in the clip. But I can put the journals that are usually in my back pocket in the jacket instead so that's an added bonus.

If you order your shirt from Landend you can have them sew a pen pocket in the shirt pocket.

Then it won't fall out even if a tad tall.

Exavtly!! I tailor my shirts with slightly deeper pockets than usual (the Airmail 71J is my benchmark. It should sit snugly inside)

Some shorter pens, like Sport, Herbin roller, M300, can pull the edge of the pocket down in an unsightly manner if the material is too thin.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
