My D.c. Ink Haul

Here's my conclusion: Ink finds are the hidden treasures of pen shows. No one wanted the ink. I wanted the ink. It's priced at retail prices or maybe a little less. Except for the one person selling a bottle of old Sheaffer Persian Rose (?) ink for 3 figures, ink treasures were there and affordable. Here's the highlights with descriptions.

First, an overview. You'll notice a couple of 4.5 oz Noodlers bottles. As you are aware, Noodlers 4.5 oz inks come with free pens. They were out of the free pens, so they substituted the large white and tabby thing in lieu of a Charlie Pen. :P

A little closer overview. From left to right:

Noodlers Violet Vote

Sheaffer Skrip #22 Blue Black (a much needed backup bottle. I am currently working through one)

Mont Blanc Lucky Orange

Noodlers Boston Brahmin

Wahl-Eversharp Everberry

Noodlers House Divided

Wahl-Eversharp Wahlberry

Noodler's Red Oak Garnet

Robert Oster Frankly Blue (Federalist Pens Exclusive)

The bottle for the Red Oak Garnet where Nathan wrote the number on it. It is the first bottle of a total of 27

Delta Maori from the Native American Collection

Noodlers Galileo Manuscript Brown

KWZ Menthol Green

Delta Peace Blue

Next is a closeup of Violet Vote. I passed on it when Anderson had it. I don't know why I decided to take it, but I remember it as a 3 oz bottle. I'd never seen it in this larger one. It is unopened.

This one is before my time. Noodler's Boston Brahmin for 2007. It is currently in a pen. It has this inexplicable shading from blue/green to blue. Really unique among my collection.

To the left is the House Divided. I personally find it unique to look at. Kind of like it a lot. The jewel of my haul (ink-wise, anyway), is next to it: Noodlers Red Oak Garnet

The index of ink reviews has no info on more than a couple of these. Including Red Oak Garnet. I can't find any info on it. Or a backstory. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate learning.

Anyway, drool. Ask away!

I think you should let the cat play in all those fabulous inks. The resulting art work could be worth a fortune. Wish i could get to a show like that. The last pen and ink store in my town shut down years ago. I miss them.

You picked the PERFECT cat to showcase those inks! I have one very similar & I would much rather have him than the Charlie or any other pen that might come with the inks. You also found some exciting inks & I hope they all are enjoyable for you.

Thanks for sharing the Haul.

This cat is too docile to play with the inks. There's another cat here that, in her younger days, never met a bottle of anything she did not want to knock over. I am SOOOOOO glad I wasn't into fountain pens during that time.

Inks, I discovered at this show, are the secret finds. I can't figure out why there is no hype about them. Except for a $100 bottle of Vintage Skrip, I got every ink I wanted that looked interesting. And my total outlay on inks was barely $50. A couple of those were literally sold for $1.00.

Incidentally, I've inked up a Metropolitan with the Red Oak Garnet. I have no idea how to describe the color except beautiful. It kind of looks like Tchikovsky, but definitely isn't. Flow is medium -- not something I'd ever say about Tchikovsky. Feathers, even on good paper. But that's really the single bad thing I have to say about it. I really want to find the backstory on this ink. Why it was made. I have a feeling this is going to be in a pen a lot going forward.

That's a great haul. Especially the 'large white and tabby thing in lieu of a Charlie pen'. :D

She does have a way of making sure she winds up in as many photos as possible.

Very nice!!

Couldn't get thrilled with the violet vote, too much ink around here to bother mixing some other shades into it to make it sing.

And a cat always makes a post the best ever!

Haven't tested Violet Vote yet. I was planning on testing it in one of the Jinhao's first because the ink was clinging to the side of the glass. When I got up this morning, it had finally settled. Still going to test it in a Jinhao, first. The Red Oak Garnet is being tested in a Metropolitan right now.

(Noodler's, I love you, I use you ALL the time in most of my pens, but I can't have you damaging them).

Violet Vote was weak, along another purply shade with a fish on the bottle.

I think I got them at a sale.

Don't jeopardize a pen for a bottle of ink....

Never! I always try out certain inks in a Jinhao or a Metropolitan first.

I want to call your cat Orson Welles.

Nice haul!

She won't mind. She is pretty chill overall.

But her name is Chakaal.

Will you do a review of the House Divided for us? and maybe the Red Oak Garnet?

Also, I thought Galileo was an FPN exclusive...

Don't call her Groo

I would never err like that!

Galileo is an FPN exclusive. I am not sure why there was someone selling it, but they did.

I will do a review, I promise. I haven't quite figured out how to do it just yet. I've done a couple, but other people do it so much better that I really need to develop a style.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
