What insights do you have about any of these suggestions or suggestions of your own?

A review of the Bic Matic (0,7), the Ballograf Rondo pencil or the Ballograf Epoca pencil could be interesting.

Wow, this is eerie...this thread led me down the rabbit hole of clutch situation's wonderful MP video reviews, which in turn led me to decide on getting 1 super nice MP as a daily user. Before his 100th review came up, I had come to the same decision and found a great deal on a NOS Pelikan D200 on Ebay as well. How funny! My all black version seems to be from the 90s.

[Edited to fix my error:]

My only complaint is that the pencil is a little back heavy so to get good balance I have to hold the pencil farther away from the point than I usually do, but I also have somewhat small hands.

My only complaints are that the cap on mine makes a little bit of wobbling sound when writing quickly and that it's a little back heavy so to get good balance I have to hold the pencil farther away from the point than I usually do.

Interesting. When you say, "the cap on mine makes a little bit of wobbling sound when writing quickly", what do you mean by the "cap"? The D200 MP doesn't have a cap, it has a push-button lead advance mechanism. See the picture below.

Whatever it is that is causing the rattling and back-heaviness in yor D200 is probably tied to the pencil mechanism inside. The matching K200 push-button ballpoint does not have any of these problems - at least mine doesn't.

I have a black/gold push-button Pelikan K200 Classic which is the matching ballpoint to your D200 mechanical pencil. The button on my K200 doesn't show any sloppiness or rattling when I write, and the pen is perfectly balanced. I bought my N.O.S. K200 for $35 USD boxed around five years ago here in the Classifieds section. The current K200 street price is around $105. I like the K200 a lot, but I think it is worth at-most $60 brand new.

On the end of the push button, my K200 has a lovely Pelikan encased in a dome of transparent resin. Does your D200 button have one too?

In contrast, I have a twist-action striated-green/black K800 ballpoint. I have come to dislike the K800. The pen is far too back-heavy, a truly bad design. There is no mechanical pencil in the 800 series. Some years ago I paid $100 for my used/like-new K800. Current street price for a K800 is around $220 USD.

Best Regards, David

Sorry, I fixed the original post to correct my mistake. I had actually meant the cap on top of the eraser (i.e., the button) ...but I fixed the problem. Idiot MP newbie error. The noisy button problem is, however, a great annoyance with the Uni Pure Malt wooden MP I bought before the D200.

My D200 looks like the one in your picture, except that the button has an all gold top and the top and is flat, not rounded at the edges. Here are a couples pics:

I can't believe I got this for 30EU!

Ok, got it. Your D200 is at least one generation removed from the current. In many cases the older models seem to be better made. EU 30 is a good price indeed. The deals are out there, you just need to keep a sharp eye out for them. Like I said, I paid just $35 USD for my K200 BP.

Take care, David

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
