Lamy Safari Crosshatch Problem

Hello FPN

It seems on successfully reassembling my cap, I noticed that the top hatch appears to be protrude out pretty far. This wouldn't be an issue for me if I wasn't worried that the whole cap would go loose and explode in my pocket. What do you thinK?

Hi Flippy,

I don't know if this is an issue or not... but to play it safe... have you tried disassembling it and reassembling it again? Maybe you'll get it right the second time around.

Btw, this is why they say "don't fix it if it ain't really broken." ;)

Sounds like good advice. Thanks!

Standing out as far as the bevel goes is the correct setting for a Safari and Vista.

The cross hatch of the AL-Star is further in, whereas the crosshatch of the Lx is like that of a Safari.

The hatch on the photo is only a slightly out too far. Hard to say if this is production variance.

Hi Josh, Astron, et al,

I couldn't answer further until I got home to compare... but Astron raises a valid point. The black plastic "finial" with the "X" ranges in depth from being very slightly counter-sunk... to being flush... to protruding out a millimeter or two.

Looking through all my Safaris and comparing them to your picture... I'm not so sure you have a problem. If everything is snug and nothing is loose, (clip, finial); I'd just leave well enough alone.

One other thing you can do is hold the cap up to the light... look into the open end... if no light is penetrating through the top, (and the parts are snug), you have a good seal... just leave it alone. ;)

Hi, This is how my Vista is, it's never been taken apart from new, say 3 years old.

The variances are greater than I anticipated. On my Vista and Safaris it's a bit more farther in than that of the TO.

Yes... they can have considerably more range then I expected... and I own 21 of these things... but never noticed it until this thread. :headsmack:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
