The Quest Is Over. I've Found The Perfect Paper

It seems that my Carène stub and MD paper really do hate each other, with the official MD pad being even worse than the Traveller's Notebook refill. The MD pad feels like it's super dry, super sticky and the Carène barely writes. It's like writing with a felt tip pen that's almost run out. The paper is fine with other pens (and especially pencils) and the Carène is fine with other paper.

Perhaps one day I'll understand why, but for now I'm resigning to the fact that I can't use my lovely Carène for my journal, which is a real shame.

Hmm, maybe you can try a different ink for this paper with that specific pen? Not another Waterman, but something else.

  • 1 year later...

I didn't read all of the posts in this thread, so I hope that no one have mentioned it before.

Anyway, I ordered a Midori MD Cotton notebook and a paper cover, unfortunately they have a strong smell, that reminds me of Rooibos tea... Anyone else have that experience? Or was it perhaps my particular seller on Amazon, that sells other things to?

It is likely the seller. I have been purchasing Midori MD notebooks on Amazon for a couple of years and have only noticed it from one vendor. I stopped purchasing from that vendor.

For the last year or so, I have been using the Midori MD notebooks and have enjoyed them greatly. But, just to mix things up a bit, I took my Traveler's Notebook with Tomoe River paper on my last international trip instead of my Midori MD notebook. I still love Tomoe River paper alot, but struggled with the narrower page. Also, I noticed that while the Tomoe River paper is wonderfully smooth, I missed the slightly "toothier" feel of the Midori MD paper. I was happy when I arrived home and could use my Midori MD notebook again. I guess I am not changing back anytime soon.

@DrPenfection thanks for your reply. I guess I will have to give it a new chance, when I can afford it.

Toothie feel is good, because I tend to use mechanical pencils, and lead (graphite) works well on it (less smudging than Rhodia's super smooth surface, to).

By the way, do you remember the seller? I don't want to have the misfortune to get a bad one again... Or if you prefer, could you recommend one or more sellers that don't have the problem?

I checked my orders and got them from Cool Japan Delivery Shop on Amazon. It does not appear as though they sell them any longer and that the value set comes from Midori Way. If this is who you got yours from you may want to check with another vendor. Anderson Pens sells them individually.

No, I got mine from Haniwa port.

Good luck with finding them!

Yes, I've also been using this book since 2017. The only notebook I use ever since. Even a drop of Monteverde California Teal won't bleedthrough. Amazing!

  • 3 months later...

Just started using a pad of the Midori and I quite like it.

When I went to purchase an A4 pad from a suggested Washington DC area store I was taken aback by the cost of postage. After a bit of searching I found a vendor that was a little more reasonable. Mutiny in NY looks to be a boutique store with a very small selection of Midori paper (pretty much the A4 and A5 pads) but they offer lot of personal service.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
