Mabie Todd New Concerto -- Any Thoughts?

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen any reviews or comments about the "new" Mabie Todd "Concerto" fountain pen. It uses a Schmidt nib.

Don't know how long the revived version of the company has been around or how many products they've produced, or even their success rate. Would be nice to have them revive their old nibs ;)

Any one have any thoughts, comments, experiences, reviews for this "Concerto" pen?

Or the revived company?

Oh yes, those...

No thanks those will not compare with, for example this:

My advice: buy the real thing. Even the most basic of Mabie Todds e.g. a Swan 3160 or a 6160 is better than those in my opinion.

Nothing compares with the vintage.

Just wondering about these new pens and about the revived company. How does it stand up with the newer pens.

Syd Saperstein has revived classic Wahl Eversharp pens.

However, and sadly, the new Mabie Todd is just a name. It would be like asking how Apples and pomme de terre compare, as they are both "apples."

There's no real connection with the old Mabie Todd. Fountain Pen Hospital bought the MT trademark and are using it to market Taiwanese pens at vintage prices.

Oh dear, very unpleasant pens. Cartridge fed, to boot.

The other thread on this subject carries a picture of the box, which seems to state "Mabie Todd, Established 1860". Are we allowed to do this with resurrected names?

Swan Mabie Todd prices have risen substantially in the last few years, but you could still get the genuine article for less than these 'homage' pens are selling for. It's a shame, really. Someone like FPH, with all their connections and experience, could/should have done a really nice job.

Quite so, but I fear that however much effort they put into it, they would never - for me at least - produce the real magic.

The craftsmanship, glorious materials and patterns and amazing (usually at least) nibs could not easily be matched today I am afraid.

I consider it poor indeed that such a fine name should be resurrected only to be figuratively dragged through the mud.

What a shame! Sad that what was done before with less can not be done today with more.

Thank you for the information.

I always thought the same person who brought back Conklin, and Esterbrook was behind the Mabie Todd resurrection too? Like most of the pens from these attempts, their performance is generally underwhelming, and are often discounted readily, and often. As the exclusive distributor, it looks like FPH got stuck with a supply that they have been trying to sell off for a number of years at significantly reduced prices to what MSRP supposedly is. Though, the value of the pens are more accurate at these reduced prices, or even slightly still a bit high when a Pilot MR writes better/ has better quality control!

FP Ink Orphanage-Is an ink not working with your pens, not the color you're looking for, is never to see the light of day again?!! If this is you, and the ink is in fine condition otherwise, don't dump it down the sink, or throw it into the trash, send it to me (payment can be negotiated), and I will provide it a nice safe home with love, and a decent meal of paper! Please PM me!For Sale: TBA

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China. With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters. Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed. And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments.. I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
