Oh, a blogger mentioned Wonder Fair on Massachusetts Street in Lawrence as a good pen/ink/paper source. Her photos showed cartridges only. It might be a store you'd feel more comfortable in at this point in your fountain pen journey. Pen Place has some pricier pens.

I'm quite familiar with Wonder Fair and I commented on Ana's post. Great store. All that paper, too!

Check your profile, then to the far right under the search tool, you should see a black bar with Edit my profile. Within that, Flag option is under location.

If you are too new for this option, you'll have to post more.

Ah, that must be my problem. I don't have any location settings under Edit My Profile. I must not have posted enough yet. :) Thanks for the tip.

I have, but I didn't know enough at the time to feel comfortable buying anything. Have you bought anything cool there?

I've visited the shop a number of times and usually buy a few bottles of ink. A number of years ago (2003), when our daughter completed grad school at KU Med, I celebrated, at my wife's suggestion, by purchasing a Pilot VP Mandarin Limited Edition from the shop. The man behind the counter said it would be a good investment as well as a good pen. Good advice and a great pen!

May we live, not by our fears but by our hopes; not by our words but by our deeds; not by our disappointments but by our dreams.

Hello Aaron and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
