Hello From Kansas

Hi there, everyone. :)

My sister gave me a Pilot Metropolitan (F) for Christmas, and that set me off and running. I have a few more pens now. They're just so darn much fun to write with. :) I've been lurking for a bit, but I recently bought what I think is a 1960's Sheaffer Imperial at an antique mall, and I decided to post pictures and see if my guesses are correct.

Thanks for providing and maintaining such a great resource.

Welcome, Aaron !

The Pilot Metropolitan is a great writing experience. I like mine a lot, but I don't use it anymore. SHE usurped it, and installed it at the location, where SHE volunteers her work. :crybaby: I can only hope that her dastardly misdemeanor will spread love for fountainpenism. I have twenty Esterbrooks, and thirty Parker 45's, but only one Metropolitan. :gaah: W-H-Y ?

(I miss the good ole days, when they just took my T-shirts.)

Auf freiem Grund mit freiem Volke stehn.
Zum Augenblicke dürft ich sagen:
Verweile doch, du bist so schön !

Topeka. (For what it's worth, I'd change my flag to the Kansas flag if I can, but I haven't figured out how yet.)

Welcome to the obsession Aaron. Much to learn and a lot of it to be found here or links from here anyway.

Always good to see someone from Kansas join in the forum. I'm about as far away from Topeka as one can get in Kansas (not quite, but close). Have you been to The Pen Place in KC Crown Center?

May we live, not by our fears but by our hopes; not by our words but by our deeds; not by our disappointments but by our dreams.

I have, but I didn't know enough at the time to feel comfortable buying anything. Have you bought anything cool there?

Check your profile, then to the far right under the search tool, you should see a black bar with Edit my profile. Within that, Flag option is under location.

If you are too new for this option, you'll have to post more. Posting gets you advanced through membership levels. Chatter topics don't count.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
