Pen And Pencil Sets (Bp's Too)

Recommended Posts

I don't know when it started for me but as my fountain pen collecting has progressed I sometimes find myself hooked on a set. Perhaps the seeds were sown by the first Sheaffer School set I got in grade school, or maybe it was the Cross set I got in high school? Whatever it was I now find myself grabbing a set when an interesting one presents itself.

A 1950 Pelikan 400 set to mark my birth year. A Sheaffer School set to remember grade school, and a Jotter set to remind me of HS and college... whatever it is the set collecting has gotten to a point that I'd like to share a few with my friends on FPN. And I want to invite you to participate as well. Feel free to tempt me share your finds with us also.

I collect Pelikan, MB, and Sheaffer primarily, majoring in Pelikan, so we'll start there. Vintage first.

Then a few modern Pelikan sets.

Sheaffer... started it all for me. I probably have more but these are the ones I shot this morning. It's a start.

Beautiful sets. I have quite a few sets. Mostly Parkers and Waterman. But I seldom use the RBs and the BPs.

And, since the "littlest Montblanc" is in here, the "littlest Pelikan" ought to be too.

Thank you mitto. I would love to see your set pictures! I know your collection is quite a bit more extensive than mine :notworthy1:

I do not collect sets, so this and my 1990s Waterman Expert pen / ballpoint / pencil set are all I have. I like your Pelikan sets in the first post.

Fantastic thread, Bill! Thanks for posting it.

You have some amazing sets. Now, this thread may cause trouble to my already beaten up wallet! I don't ever use pencils or BP, but the collector in me is getting very tempted!

Is the picture below a M/D350 set? :puddle:

And, since the "littlest Montblanc" is in here, the "littlest Pelikan" ought to be too.

I'll see if a get the very few sets that I have and post here later!!

Praxim, lovely Waterman's set! And with box, papers and note!!

Nice sets! I keep thinking I'd love a FB/BP set because sometimes you really do need a ballpoint.

Why is it that the Demi Signet pencil is the same size as the standard Signet pencil?

Beside the length is the girth of the two also the same?

Yes, it should have been smaller, it´s not the right pencil for the demi, maybe the former owner preferred the larger pencil, who knows.

farmdogfan, those are simply stunning! Thank you so much for sharing (I may need to screencap those for the reference folder).

Lam1, yes, that is an M350 set. Cute isn't it.

Praxim, I like that Waterman set also, thanks!

Really my only set is a Parker 45 Flighter. Fountain pen, ballpoint and mechanical pencil.

Well, I do have a few, a complete set of 455,450 and 400nn, a couple Servus '50's to early '60's Servus...an Austrian company...with all the '50's BP problems. :)

I have deleted my account at Photobucket, so must take some time to find a new photo server, and upload. Told them I didn't think the million dollars they were charging was acceptable....$399.00 = a million dollars in my books. $3.99 a year might have been ok....but not a month.

Then I do have to make new photo's....of the BP's and lots of inkwells that were never photographed due to my lazyness.

I had never liked mechanical pencils.....then mostly by accident, tried my Pelikan 450, and found it had wonderful balance, and for some 6 weeks used it to make notes instead of my fountain pens. The 455 is not a favorite BP of mine....typical '50's.... :( ( Grew up the '50s and the modern ball points...even the better free ones are so much better....the cheaper free ones are as good or better......IMO. I defiantly would not pay big money for the high status ones of today.

Back in @ 1970, I went over to the BX to get 'the' high class thin matt black and gold Cross BP pen, and got mugged by the P-75 brothers....that too is a BP I don't use. I should stick the lead pencil cartridge back into it to see if it's a good MP.

My wife has a good selection of BP's...many I didn't want, some are usable.

I don't have any BP's in my pen cups.

When I got into fountain pens, I went around the house and found I had 200 free ball points of various levels of comfort***....and still had a few Jotters, both BP and an MP....which does not have the balance of that old Pelikan 450.

***Sold at the flea market, the cheap ones in rubberband bundles of ten.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
