Pai Li 835 Informal Review

I could not find much about Pai Li pens here at FPN but there are now many different models of that brand available on eBay in the US of A.  I bought an 835 from Hong Kong for $2.06US.  I know it was right for me because the seller said it was "suitable for learned men";-)

It is a metal pen that weighs about 30 grams (about maximum for me) and comes in black as well as metallic red and blue.  The nib is a fairly fancy two tone number though I think the "engraving" is stamped on.  There is some spring to it and you can get a line at least twice as wide by bearing down.

There is "gold" trim galore.  The cap sports the obligatory Parker arrow.  When the cap is closed the barrel's waistband shows beneath the four layer waistband of the cap whose middle layers have grooves cut in them as though to allow you to get a good grip on those bands so that you can...???  It's all much too busy for me but otherwise the pen is attractive.

Underneath the nib it looks very old school and comb-like.  (Sorry for the blur but it does tell the story.)

It writes great!  Smooth with just a little tooth.  Ink flow is fine.  It takes long international cartridges and shorts seem to fit as well.  A slide converter is included.  The clip is quite stiff and seems strong and solidly attached.  One side of the clip is pretty rough.  Some of the black paint for the name and model labels splattered and there are chips in the red finish here and there that let the metal show through.  My guess is that there will be a lot more of these with time as the finish seems both thin and soft.  Perhaps the worst news is that the UPC code seems to be permanently imprinted on the cap!-(

For me this is a good choice at this price.  While the finish may not last I hope to be free of the breaks and cracks reported on the Jinhao 599 and 992.  I prefer the way it writes to most Jinhaos.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
