Reasonable Price?

There's a 146 tester (black) with a BB on eBay that I was looking at. Probably nothing unusual.

For daily users, if the price is right, could be a bargain. Wouldn't have to worry about it.

It's about $US330. Not sure if that quite qualifies as a bargain...

I don't think that qualifies as a bargain for a Mb Tester 146 :(

Did some doodling with Agatha (because what else was I going to call her, really?) yesterday, and gosh what a nice nib (if I can ever find the charging cable for my camera I will take a decent photo of it, I swear!) However, I have to say that she feels like a pen that wants to be used with some ceremony - she is not a "whip it out of your pocket to take a quick note" kinda girl. So, I'm officially questing for the right EDC MB as well.

Given my preference for pocket pens I think the 149 is just gonna be too big, so probably a 146. Ideally Bordeaux, or black with platinum trim and an interesting nib. That said, I watched a couple of video reviews of the Boheme this morning and I really like the size (similar to my Kaweco Skyline Sports, of which I have several) and the mechanism -weird but cool. Piston fillers are nice, but it means you have to have a bunch of ink bottles, whereas I am very comfortable filling cartridges with a syringe so I can use my ink samples. As well as the one that's for sale here, I've found a mint one with what might be a custom ground nib - looks to be a left foot OB at an angle of 4 degrees, which I read somewhere was a great angle for maximum comfort with some line variation.

But would the process of screwing the cap on detract from ease and speed of use? My Kaweco Liliput Fireblue (which admittedly is not a practical pen in any way) has a screw on cap that requires both hands to get it on straight, and that makes me slightly less keen to use it for quick notes.

I feel like I'm narrowing down my options a little now, but I still don't know exactly what I want. I probably need to go back to the MB boutique for a tryout...

ETA: looking at the Boheme photos again I'm not sure about the 4 degree angle, but it definitely is an OB, it still has the sticker on the barrel. US$445. even if I go to my local boutique I doubt that they will have anything with an oblique nib in stock that I can try. Maybe I shouldn't risk an oblique? I'm assuming they have a smaller sweet spot than a regular nib?

Who am I even kidding. I want a 146 AND a Boheme. I can JUST about afford to get one or the other now, but not both. There's an ad in the Classifieds for a platinum 146 B nib for US$350...

Unless you find the rare 149 variants. Had an OBB "Muster" that was awesome.

I saw one in MINT condition for sale two days ago.

Do most of you use a 146 posted or unposted? And if posted is it still balanced to use?

Unposted here. I think the little Mozart is the only pen I own that I post.

Likewise.

For photos I post in order to position nibs, but for use it's only the platinum Mozart EF that I post.

This became my default after joining FPN and reading in the Montblanc Forum that several members didn't post.

I tried it, liked it, and there it remains.

Interesting! I have a definite preference for posted (I made an exception for the Rouge et Noir because the cap is so pretty). Thus far it seems like the Boheme might be the better option....

I don't post, except I used to have a standard Boheme and that I did. It also had a lovely nib, the mechanism was part of the ceremony and never got tiring.

I now have a Boheme Big Size, I don't need to post it and it fits between the 146 and 149 sizes. There was one in the classifieds last time I looked, well recommended.

The 1912 has the "interesting" mechanism like the Boheme, and is a pistin filler, but as said above you cannot post it.

I found one of the last Boheme noir in a shop, but the 1912 won in the end.

Another recommendation for thr XL Boheme. Seems a perfect blend of the wants - cartridge, retractable nib, postable, platinum trim, 146 size nib, 149 size girth, smaller than either when closed.

I never post any of my pens apart from those that I have to. i.e. Boheme, Kaweco Sport. I prefer to not have scratched pen barrels. -_-

That reminds me, if anyone fancies a non-retracting Boheme with MB leather pouch, there's one on eBay AU currently sitting at $AU46... low start price because seller wasn't sure it was genuine.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
