Hi

After frequently visiting this knowledgeable base of forum, I joined.

I just started fountain pen a year ago. They are a wonderful writing instruments !

Not only improving penmanship, they are very satisfying to look at.

So far my pens are

- Waterman 515

- Sailor 1911

and looking for a vintage "wet noodle", but they are so expensive.

Regards, Joey

P.S. Sorry for my horrible English, they aren't my first language.

Welcome aboard Joey, from Charleston, SC. Those are nice looking pens, and I'm glad they write well for you.

Welcome, Joey !

"Wet noodle" ? I guess you desire a fountain pen with generous ink flow, and a nib with a lot of "flex". This pen might not be prohibitively expensive. Some "nib-meister" might have a large, soft, gold nib. What size pen would you choose ? As big as your Sailor 1911 ? Thinner ? Much thinner ? Choice of filling system ? There are a lot of vintage, lever-fill pens around. This is a good place to learn and discuss your plan.

You are welcome to practice your English on us, although I have no difficulty understanding your English. (Certainly, it is better than my Australian. )

Write with joy.

Welcome to FPN, Joey! I used to have a Sailor 1911 as well, it got stolen :(

but I have 4 pens now, ST Dupont, Waterman Carène, TWSBI Vac 700R, Lamy Joy. I use the ST Dupont mainly for writing, and drawing with the other ones! Have fun and enjoy your time while at FPN!

Size really doesn't matter. I prefer lever filler, or something that is not messy to use.

I have looked around. Many of you recommended Mauricio Aguliar. Although his pen are very nice, they are very expensive.

Looking to buy ~200 USD or less.

Well..... that's sad to hear. I often lost my ballpoints pens too; Borowing it to someone, stolen, too shy to ask back.

Lastly, What is the average age of FPN users ? It's rare for young people to use them.

Just being curious.

Hello Joey and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
