The Vacs

I have 2 ecos. I am thinking about a vac but am concerned about leaking and burping. Is this an issue or are the vacs dependable fillers?

I have two ECO's with no issues and a 700r also with no issues. The 700r is wetter and writes wider then the nibs that come with the ECO.

I've had my Vac 700 now going on 2 years, and I have never had any issues with burping.

I've had a problem with a minor leak once. This had been because I had over-tightened the nib unit and as a result the nib collar had cracked. It needed a replacement (I already had a second collar at hand)

Considering that I carry the pen a lot in my front pants pocket, and also considering that I have the safety 'shut-off-valve' on my pen removed (one can easily do that, it is not a vital part and I like it better that way) I would vouch that the pen seals really well.

Now, I'm not vouching that the pen might not develop some kind of issues ever, but sealing seems not inherently an issue with the Vac 700.

I have a Vac Mini that I carry around every day in my bag. No problem with burping or leaking and I leave the blind cap open too.

How does one remove this valve on the vac mini? My plunger knob thingy broke like twenty minutes ago (TWSBI says because I overtighten it... I don't agree) and in the future I want to prevent having to open it at all....

To OP: it does not burp or leak at all!

I have had a pair of Vac Minis that have seen the ins and outs of my laptop bag pen sleeve for over 6 months now. None of the issues you described (burping or leaking) to report. The only issue I ever encountered with them was a slightly stubborn tightening process on the back cap of one which was due to an o-ring getting displaced while cleaning. Fantastic pens, the both of them!

As for the Vac 700R, this has been a fairly recent acquisition, but I definitely love the pen so far. It is a bit long when posted, but so far so good otherwise!

  • 3 weeks later...

I've had my Vac mini for long enough I don't remember when I got it. It was not long after they came out. I'd say I carry it on average 5.75 days out of every week. Never a single problem. I haven't even cleaned it. I filled it up with Diamine Blue Velvet and I've kept it filled with that ever since. With my EF nib and the huge amount of ink, it just keeps going and going.

I'm about to fill it to the top and take it on a very long flight (US to New Zealand). I don't anticipate any problems at all. I love my Vac Mini.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
