have not broken my hard and fast rule...only pay with Paypal no matter what.

This appeared on an obscure auction site For Sale £50.

The messages went thus,

Me: What condition is it in.

Seller: It's brand new.

Me: Offer '£50 paid with Paypal inc delivery Royal Mail 1st Class signed'

Seller (after 12 hours wait): Accepted.

Nothing for 3 hours

Me: Message me your Paypal details

Seller: Can't we meet up.

Me: I am 100 miles from you and you agreed my offer of Paypal + delivery.

Seller: I'm gonna have to charge delivery.

Me: Did you not read my offer which you accepted. OK How much.

Nothing for another 6 hours

Me: OK £55 inc RM 1st Class signed.

Seller: OK, but I don't have Paypal can you do BT.

Me (After much thought because I want the pen): OK email me your account details. We now start talking through email.

Me: I also want your home address.

Seller: What do you want that for.

Me: Just in case things go pear shaped. Plus you have to put it on the RM package anyway.

Seller: OK and he provides bank details ONLY saying 'Pay today (yesterday) and I will post today and email you the tracking number'

Me: Hmmmm OK I pay over the funds at 1300 hours. Plenty of time for seller to get last post.

I have heard nothing more from the 'SELLER' since. I have emailed asking for the tracking number....nothing.

Ohhhhh deary me.......Force you are a darn fool. :(

Everything was wonderful up until you did not insist on his address, and verify it. Things may yet work out, given they are known to be slow. If it were worth going to police then you have account details to what I imagine is a british bank. Have you looked up the bank's location from its branch code?

Good luck.

I have a bad feeling about this. Even if I had wanted the pen badly I wouldn't have done a bank transfer. I hope he sends it and was just being slow. He still could mail it out next week. Fingers crossed. :)

Yes, in UK.

Not every seller is diligent or competent. That relates to why we can at times get good deals.

So where is the pen? Have you got his phone number? Can't you talk to him? Can't he send you a copy/image of the receipt through email attachement or through Whatsapp?

Damnation....I have in one sense messed up,

The seller did not mentioned in the description or shown in the pictures.

I also asked before the offer if it had any scratches, dinks or dents to which the reply was It's brand new.

Otherwise a pen in unused and mint condition

It's going to take yet more hassle sending it back and going on the buying experience I would never get my return postage paid let alone money back,,,,,,

Ohhh yes, this is how it arrived. Tapped with short lengths of PVC electrical tape. Inside had absolutely no protective packing whatsoever.

That I would consider minor.. Excellent pen for this price! Enjoy! :)

Maybe on early pens where they have the owners name manually engraved on a gold ring but on modern pens with a company name its a desirability and value issue.

While it plays no part in the function it's rather annoying I was not informed of it.

Yip, a beautiful pen, but I'd have been bummed out too.

I'm not a fan of "other" inscriptions, and if I had been told, I would have dismissed the pen.

Dupe-ery shouldn't be dismissed just because it's a beautiful pen.

In saying that, it is a helluva beautiful pen. :D

Very beautiful pen in spite of the inscription. The nib is beautiful. Looking at that beautiful nib in that pen makes me feel that having an EF L'etalon nib in one of my Phileas pens is a sacrilege of sorts.

I have several L'Etalon nibs in my Phileas pens, and I don't look upon it as a sacrilege. :) I look upon it that I'm fortunate enough to have bought the nibs, and to have been able to transfer them to my Phileas pens, since it is not a simple task. ;)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
