Splotchy Nib

Dorf

Recommended Posts

I have a 149 with a beautiful m nib (just replaced from a F nib). Constantly, there is a spot of ink on top of the nib located in the middle of the crack area. I have tried to wipe it off, but as soon as I start to write, the spot of ink comes back again. It's so annoying, and this pen is starting to drive me crazy! I can not bear to send the pen back to Montblanc once again...

Have you tried flossing & spit?

I'd clean w/ a brass shim & rub a toothpick dipped in Liquitex along the slit & then wipe + refill.

Warning...The above advice is a wild guess :D

It sounds like ink creep. Not really a problem. It's perfectly normal.

I am wondering if ink creep can result in plating loss around the breather hole. I have used permanent MB inks in one of my 146s for years and have noticed a little bit of plating loss at the spot where the ink creep occurs.

I'd love to see a photo or two or three of your pen.

Maby it's normal, but it doesn't look good to have that black spot on in the middle of that beautiful shiny nib.. :(

I think it is ink not pen related. What ink you using? Montblanc ink usually doesn't creep but Noodler for example does a disaster.

I have had this on a couple of pens and not on others. You could send it in to Montblanc, or ask for an exchange as it is still new, they will have Medium's in stock. It will be caused by a minor imperfection on the nib, which might be fixable by flossing.

I really think it's the ink.

Anyway, before attempting nib alterations and/or going for a complaint, I would try a different ink color or brand. So later I can go complain full-heartedly when I'm sure it's not me

I wouldn't worry about nib creep unless it spreads all over the nib, and yours isn't that bad. It's totally normal. You'll get used to it. I used to wipe it off compulsively, too, but there's really no point, since it just comes right back.

I find it strange that this is normal, since my 144 is not like this.. Maby I have to accept it, but it doesn't look good with that black spot on the nib surface. I'm surprised that it's like this on a £ 680 pen..

Please, have a look at the nib shots in the strand below. You will see a few good examples of ink creep. Most wet nibs do it. https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/316679-montblanc-red-gold-149-obbb/page-25

Hmm.. I couldn't see anything wrong on those pics..

Could you upload the images here?

There are forum members who cannot access google-drive.

May I see a writing sample too?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
