Black Swan In Massachusetts...?

First, a little background into: I've had a desire for a waterproof purple ink but no funds to purchase one so I decided to try mixing my own. I had a bottle of Noodler's 54th Massachusetts (which is my everyday go-to ink) and a bottle of Black Swan in Australian Roses. I use a Hobonichi for my personal and work planner so I write almost exclusively on Tomoe River Paper, thus, that's what I wrote my samples on. All of my pens are either F or EF nibs so I can't show this mix in any other nib sizes right now.

The mix: 0.5 ml Noodler's 54th Massachusetts

1.5 ml Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses

~3 drops of water

Thoughts: This is my new favorite ink - although, admittedly, I've only used it for 24 hours. :) It's quick drying and waterproof and behaves very well with my highlighters. It flows really well in my Lamy Safari which is the only pen I've tried it in so far. Not sure yet how difficult (or not) this will be to clean out of my pens and I'm not sure of any staining. I don't have a scanner so I hope these pictures give a good idea of the color but for reference, the ink is almost the exact color of my Lamy Dark Lilac pen body (I don't have any of the ink to compare to).

So, Black Swan in Massachusetts? Australian Roses in Massachusetts? I'm terrible at naming things.

I thought about that one but I thought that might be too close to Black Swan in African Violets.

I thought it might. I haven't seen the Lamy ink but my mix matches my pen perfectly.

Almost looks like Lamy Dark Lilac.

Yea...It actually does, plus that wonderful waterproof property! This is an awesome ink mixture for taking notes!

Very nice mix. Do you know which version of BSIAR you used? There was a version a few years ago where it was a lot more purple to begin with (IIRC some issue with getting the dye components). It was a lot more purple (and less red-violet) than the original. I think the newer batches are supposed to be closer to the original, but I haven't tried it.

Additionally, my sample of 54th MA ended up being a lot darker and more teal than the bottled batch.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
