Blackstone (Scents Of Australia) Kunzea Red

I haven't done any review recently, mainly because I haven't bought any new ink. Since the news of new Blackstone inks I've been looking forward to them. Mishka5050 recently sent me samples of these new inks. Thank you!

I have enjoyed the previous Blackstone inks (the Colours of Australia ones). Blackstone inks have saturated colours and a very wet and smooth flow, all of which is what I love most about an ink. Some of them might have small problems, like Uluru Red dries out on the nib very quickly and gives hardstart, and the surfectant in Daintree Green could separate and turn into something goo-ish (a shake can mix the ink back together), but they don't cause much trouble.

My first impression of these new scented inks are that they also have rich colours and wet flow. So far I haven't encountered any problem. In terms of behaviour the only thing I could complain about (if I'm being picky) is that they could be too wet. Even by my standard I'd say they are a bit too wet, and can turn any nib into a firehose. I'm sure they are perfect for dry pens.

I love red inks so I'm reviewing Kunzea Red first. It is, like I said, really wet. Personally I'm not quite satisfied with this colour. I find it too brown. Both Blackstone reds (Uluru Red and Kunzea Red) look vibrant when they are freshly put on paper, but quickly dry to a flat and muted colour and lose their vibrancy. I'd prefer that they could retain that vibrancy when dried.

As for the smell, it's not strong. You could smell it in the vial/bottle but not something overwhelming. I'd say it smells like rose.

Thanks for the review, Lgsoltek!

Personally, I like this red, especially in the writing sample. It's not too loud or attention-grabbing, and looks a bit vintage-y to me. The swab does look too muted and orange though. Reminds me of Diamine Monaco?

I don't find Kunzea Red to be brownish in hue - it's more of a dark red to me. I agree though that the swabs and ink splash especially are somewhat less vibrant when dry than wet. I'm not a great fan of Uluru, but this is a lovely, floral scented ink!

I think this year is the year of red ink, this one is beautiful... I really have to procure Blackstone inks...

I think Monaco would be more orange-brownish, more brick-y.

I'm not too crazy about this kind of orange-brownish red, but if you're into this kind of colour it's a great one!

And guys, I'll try to post a comparison with MB Shakespeare and KWZI Cherry tonight.

Well it'll have to wait till tomorrow...

Oh! More teasing! ... But I have received interesting red stuff today. A private issue IG ink which looks mysterious and inviting... an ink for a CRV?

This is a great red. It has quickly become a favorite and has been promoted to my 1990s Waterman Opéra pen. When it goes on wet, it is a rich, intense red, and it dries to darker, more subtle dark red. And then there's the scent. Wonderful, intoxicating scent. Very pleased.

I'm starting to hate this ink. It dries out extremely fast when the pen is left uncapped. Just a few seconds and I have trouble starting. It's horrible if you're using this ink for taking notes. Uluru Red has the same problem.

I haven't noticed any dry out issues. Hmmmm. The Waterman Opéra is a very wet writer, however.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
