North African Violet?

OH my, this is so sad. NAV is beautiful and an ink as vibrant a purple as BSB is blue.

If you want a good fuss free ink, try Noodler's Purple People Eater. (Well it's really only named Purple).

KWZI Violet #4 which I have currently inked up (and if you want a letter, send me your address because I have it inked in a pen right now), is the closest to NAV as I have ever found and it performs better. Thanks to Tas for the comparison.

Thank you, Amber. Yes! A letter would be awesome. Ill PM you.

The NAV I have is a sample. Maybe it was from one of those older bad batches. It looks nothing like I imagine it should. And the flow is chalky. Maybe in part it is bc if waterproof properties. (But Lexington grey is great.) Or maybe it was a mislabeled sample.

I'm really surprised reading this thread. NAV was one the first purple ink I ever got, and my batch was nothing like what people complained about (it was quite similar to PR Purple Mojo, but a little brighter -- but IIRC it didn't dry quite as fast as Purple Mojo). Nothing like what people posting their scans look like on my screen. In fact, it was what I thought of as "purple" from the first review I saw of it on the Goulet Pens website -- turned out one of the reviews was from an old friend who I've known almost as long as I've known my husband, only I didn't know he was a pen guy (it was FPN's own Uncle Red). I remember at the time (this would be about 7 years ago at this point) thinking "Purple? You mean there's other colors besides blue and black and bue-black? And you can get PURPLE ink? Tell me more!"

Mind you, it's been several years since I've used it.

I found my bottle of Noodler’s NAV to be a beautiful, vibrant colour but it’s so dry that it’s virtually unusable.

I ended up adding a drop or two of Polar Black to my unfortunate bottle of NAV to make it usable. I also purchased a second bottle which wasn't what I hoped for but at least is usable and pleasant. The scan is a wee bit paler than the actual ink but still fairly represents it. I won't be purchasing a third. I found consolation in the purchase of a bottle of Baystate Concord Grape which has some water resistance as well as a lovely color. It looks similar to Amberlea's Purple People Eater (A name much preferred to plain old purple :)).

Mine works well with certain pens but is finicky.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
