Recommended Posts

I have a vintage Sheaffer Sailor Sentinel which I would like to use but cannot find the correct fitting cartridges or converter ( any advice would be gratefully received ) !

I have been informed by Cultpens that the Standard or Skrip ones will not fit , but the old slimline converters might be suitable !

Can anyone help please ?

Just got an answer back from Sheaffer Customer services and they told me that this model takes the slim cartridge or converter only.

So thats from the horses mouth, so to speak !
At least I now know just what to look for !

Sheaffer was supplying Monteverdi mini converters as replacements.

I have one that came fitted with the slim Targa converter.

Sheaffer quit making/supplying the slim Targa converters a long time ago, which is why they were supplying the Montiverde mini converters.

I know, Ron. But I bought mine used and the previius owner perhaps had a spare slim Targa converter that he put in the pen.

Whatever the reason mine came with the slim converter.

You were lucky! I think that we got about half a dozen of the slim Targa converters in all the Sheaffer stuff that landed in Philly 9 years or so ago, and that was IT. If someone has one, its well worth resacing. Actually, that now applies to any of the Sheaffer squeeze converters come to think of it.

Bought a not much used Sheaffer Sentinel Sailor which was a corporate gift which has engraving on it's barrel. Local fleamart find. Came with sheaffer slim converter installed with decided it for me. I also have a TRZ which is yet to be inked with the same converter. Some months ago I also found some slim sheaffer cartridges. Knowing how rare they are I may want to head to that shop again and buy more of them slim carts.

On another note the Sentinel is not too bad. The M nib writes quite wet with Parker Quink Black. There is a slight issue with baby bottom that in need of seeing to.

Ron, is it possible to re-sac the Sheaffer squeeze converters? I have a bunch of them, and still working, but how long should I expect them to last?

If the Sheaffer converter has a black end, it has a latex sac. Red end converters have a PVC sac. You can resac a converter, and given the limited supply and now high price of NOS squeeze converters, its worth doing. You have to coax the plug out, take the dead sac off, install a new sac and reinsert in the casing. Flatten the points where it was staked originally, put the plug in, then stake again using a sharp punch. I rotate slightly to put the plug in a different spot.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
