Where To Buy A Little Out Of Date (?) Cheap Pilots Online

Hello all,

I'd like to get a Plumix (the long version) with a B (do they do BB?), and a 78G online (I can't get them here in Japan), but all I've found is the Plumix for about $25 and upwards and the 78G for $35 on eBay. Those prices are horrible. I appreciate the 78G isn't actually in production any more, but $35 for a what, $12 pen, is pretty grim.

Anyone know of an online source for either/both? I've tried Jet Pens and Cult Pens and Goulet Pens and a lot of the other usual suspects.

The 78G seems to have been updated and now called 78G+. It appears the changes are in the colour of the pen and the converter changing from con-20 to con-40. It is available in EF, F, M, and B, but not BB. There are a number of sellers on ebay.

Like you, the only 78G I've been able to find with the BB nib are expensive.

Will work for pens...

Thanks Amanda, $15 or so + free shipping for a B is far more like it (and it said CON20 - from CON40?).

Still interested in any other online options for BB though, and Plumix/Pluminix.

Did you see the Pluminix Rainbow that is available in many colours from several Hong Kong sellers on ebay? It's looks like a funny little pen: 2cm shorter than the normal Plumix/Pluminix, but the nibs which are available as 'fine' or 'broad' look like the italic nib on the Plumix in different sizes.

I am waiting for a fine one and hoping it will be different to the 'medium' Plumix I already received (which is a very nice, almost crisp, italic about 1.0mm wide).

It is all very confusing!

Will work for pens...

I bought a couple of Pluminixes from one of those sellers to swap into some Metros. I don't have an M to compare for you, but the difference between F and B is pretty big. Regular Metro F nib on the bottom.

Hopefully this sample from my Plumix medium nib matches close enough to sakamichi's image of fine and bold. :-)

I haven't ordered a bold yet, but I probably will because I would like to have a set of these to put in Preras (only because that was what I had to start with - Metropolitans would have been a better choice if I had realised I might eventually need three of them!).

I will note here too in case it helps someone else: I had trouble with my medium nib when I first swapped it from the Plumix to the Prera - it felt misaligned, dry and a scratchy even though I was careful - the solution was to swap the feed as well.

Will work for pens...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
