Any idea why US nibs trended courser?

 

I think the Parker nib scale changed when Parker moved from the US to the UK.

Parker UK had a wider scale than Parker US, similarly Parker France is also wider than Parker US (at least based on my IM's nib).

 

But I was told that Lamy also changed their scale at some point. The old Lamy nibs being finer than today's Lamy nibs.

 

My feeling is the scale is somewhat market driven.

• Medium being average, they want people to feel they are "average."
• There is some ego involved also. If I have pen X with a M nib and my M nib writes narrower than another person's pen Y with a M nib, I might be upset, since my signature is not as BOLD.
• How people are taught and write comes into play. If you write small/tight, you want a finer nib than if you write large and spread out.

+1 for the EF Preppy. The only thing I have rivaling it is the Franklin Christoph Masuyama Needlepoint. You can also swap out into a Plaisir if you want something sturdier (though the Plaisir is not eyedropperable)
