The Rarest Waterman You Own

Around 1890, i believe. It also has apparently never seen ink (dipped or filled.) Though that nib sure is calling out for writing (not that I will, don't worry.)

(not great pics, but from the original auction)

Extraordinary pen should be used to write something extraordinary.

Your Stenographer is indeed fine  :puddle:

Anyway, base on your logic, it's no wonder Einstein's Waterman is locked up inside a thick vault; of course currently there is no one who has enough capabilities to write down the equation of final unification in theoretical physics.

I have this strange waterman. We were checking some leftovers and among them were some fountain pens. One of them reads Waterman, so I presume it is a Waterman.

The barrel reads patd1884 May28 1899 & aug 4 1903

waterman's ideal fountain safety pen penn.y.USA

The cap read waterman's pat apr 28 1903

and on the bottom it reads 121/2 v.s. baby

When we screwed the cap of it looked like an empty barrel, but then I saw something in the barrel. It looked the nib was somehow lost in the barrel. And then we found out that you could actually turn the black thing at the bottom and the nib came out.

It was a half hour or so full of wonder. And now we trying to figure out what it is and whether it actually is in working condition

It is just under 9 cm long, the cap is around 21/2 cm, the barrel 8 cm and when the nib is out it is just over 9 cm. The diameter of the barrel is just under 1 cm

Thanks, I did google the patents, but did not think of googling the bottom text. Now I found this youtube thing and it perfectly describes the pen and how to handle it. Now whether to try or not to try. Dropping ink into the barrel seems quite scary.

Don't fill it until you've determined the seals are sound -- otherwise you'll have a big mess.

You can test it by wiping away any ink from the barrel mouth, then sucking on the barrel to create a vacuum so that the barrel sticks to your lip. If it doesn't hold a vacuum, the seals will need to be replaced. They may well need to be replaced anyway.

Guess so, the pen came from my mother and hasn't been used for at least 50 years. So I did your test and it appears quite leacky.I thik I could drink a coke through the barrel.

I've just noticed I've never posted a reply to this topic - i.e. I was about to add a photo of my Waterman's 58 when I receive it. It's been a while since then. This was my line-up in July 2017

post-136832-0-28077400-1520541754_thumb.jpg

List of the pens in this photo (from left to right):

- 54-1/2 V - Cardinal Red HR

- 3 V - Burgundy (marble) celluloid

- Nurses pen

- Lady Patricia

- 54 V RRHR

- Commando

- 100 Year Pen - burgundy

- 94 Steel Quartz/Red

- 94 Steel Quartz/Red

- 94 Mahogany (brown) Creme - Manifold nib

- 52 RRHR

- 54 RRHR

- 54 654

- 12 Woodgrain Eyedropper

- 42 BCHR

- 42 RRHR

- 56 RRHR

- 58 RRHR Manifold nib

In the meantime, I've got few more - I'll have to add photo...

- 14S - BCHR Safety Pen

- 52-1/2V RRHR set (pen and pencil)

- 3 Green Marbled celluloid

- 5 with Red keyhole nib (black celluloid)

- 3V Moss Agate

- 3V Green Marble celluloid

- few 52s in various state of "need repairs"

So I'd say my 12, 14S and perhaps 54-1/2V Cardinal Red are the rarest of my Waterman's. Maybe even 58.

Magnificent collection! The largest I have is a 56 —and I've always thought it was a giant—, but your 58 is positively gargantuan! Wonderful!

Thanks! These days I'm way more careful about indiscriminately spending money :))

Yeah, 58 is impressive. On par with modern large pens. I don't use it that much, my pen is actually extremely well preserved - and I'm the second owner.

Nowdays I'm looking for another #8 nib, but flexible one to replace my manifold. I want to send it for re-tipping.

And I've held once - in my own hands - Waterman 20 ... with #10 nib. Now that dwarfs 58... !!!

At the LA pen show a few weeks ago, I saw 2 vendors that were selling the Watermans 20 with the #10 nib.

It was comically large. I didn't even check the prices.

I've seen few offered on eBay and in some vintage pen shops - and if my memory serves me well, non were cheaper than 2500 USD. I'm yet to see one writing or being used - I love eyedroppers. One I've held in my hand was priced at 2800 USD and I am not sure if the seller had used it actually. If it has some amazing line variation, then I get the price. Otherwise it is a curiosity, rarity and museum item only i.e. a freak.

And I stand corrected - here's one on eBay currently 1,999 USD

Nothing terrifically rare, but a couple of somewhat scarce models.

Come to think about it, I have a Lady Patricia ringtop in Nacre. I’ve never seen another...that should go back into my rotation.

Well yours has a couple more points going for it than mine.

Force, This is the first Hundred Year demonstrator set I've ever seen!

Excellent transparency for its age!

Nice writing sample, too!

"Rarest Waterman I own, you ask?"

It must be my elusive Black Sea and Gold Carène. I'm the only one I've met that has one.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
