Eh, What Am I Missing At British Bespoke Pens?

I'm a big fan (and collector) of Conway Stewart writing instruments, and am considering purchasing several pens from BBP. I'm trying to figure out what I am missing in pricing pens at BBP. For example, their web site shows a price of £320.83 for a CS 100. AT current conversion rate of 1.28 that is equivalent to USD 410.98. However, when I click on the US currency logo on the BBP web site, it shows a price of $502.16. Similarly for a Churchill posted at £374.17 converts to $479.31, and the BBP website states $585.65. All prices, £ and $ are exclusive of VAT. So, what am I missing? I'm a bit befuddled, even at my age.

Perhaps you should take it up with BBP. I doubt we can help you. Probably a glitch in in their conversion program or they simply have not updated it. As you know, the pound has been losing and the dollar gaining.

It's clear that BBP is using the same exchange rate for each pen; however, it's clearly not the correct one and needs to be updated.

I'm sure if you email David Cooper, he will look after getting it corrected.

Communication with BBP is very good. I can only repeat that asking directly will probably give you a satisfactory anwer.

I got a Churchill from them, and I do like the flag nib.

I note in passing that their Euro prices are also extravagant compared with the actual exchange rate from GBP, although not to the same extent as for USD.

Should not VAT be deducted for exports anyway?

Hi guys

We have been aware of these inconsistencies with exchange rates for a while now and are currently working with our technical team to get it fixed.

In the meantime, here's a suggestion for you... If you buy a pen in GBP using your credit/debit card or by PayPal, your bank or card company will convert it to $ or € at the current rate.

Hope that works for you.

Ahh, true to form, BBP has come through again with helpful customer service. Thanks for letting us know, and now I (and I hope any others) can, and will, order without worries.

Thanks again David,

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
