Got To Be Sumgai For Once...

So my wife and I went out for a Saturday drive and happened upon an antiques barn. Stopped in, inquired about fountain pens, said they didn't have any, but that she saw some pens in a box about 5 miles down the road at another shop. Well, we went down there to check it out and sure enough, some pens in a box...calvin klein pen or some other junky pens. However, I kept looking and came upon a baggie with 3 pens in it marked $6, with 20% off. I could see one was a lever fill, another was a Sheaffer and the last was...some kitzchy pen from Graceland with a moving Elvis. So yeah, $1.60/pen.

So, the lever fill turned out to be a Penman, I posted on that in the general section. The Sheaffer turned out to be a Sheaffer Special snorkle with a F6 nib (PdAg). Amazingly, the sacs in both pens were fine (!) but the Sheaffer needed a new o-ring in the barrel, which I happened to have on hand. So, I took 'er apart, hung the nib in the ultrasonic for about 20 mins, straightened out the slightly bent snorkel, and voilâ, she works perfect!

Body could use a touch more polishing. There's a few spots of corrosion on the band.

Sorry about the dust, I need a tack cloth!

So, no, not a SUPER exciting find, but the price certainly made up for it!

Nice - pen and price! It is good to be Sumgai once in awhile!

May we live, not by our fears but by our hopes; not by our words but by our deeds; not by our disappointments but by our dreams.

Wait -- you're saying you got a Snorkel for (effectively) $1.60 + sales tax..... :o

Nice going! You're definitely in the running for "sumgai of the week".

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
