24-Hour Sale, Birmingham Pens

Hi everyone--

Just received an e-mail from Birmingham Pens (f/k/a xfountainpens). They're having a 24 hour sale -- buy any TWSBI (including an ECO!) and get one of their 15 house-branded, bottled inks (usually $8) for free. Plus free shipping over $39. Their ECO prices are the same as Goulet and a few bucks cheaper than Amazon (but come with free shipping if you add a little more onto the order).

Very little discussion anywhere about their inks. Just a couple of references here that the "whole set" was "good, but not amazing" and a few instagram posts.

There seem to be some fun, different colors. And for $8 bucks a bottle, how can you go wrong?

It's too bad the 24 hour sales is for online purchases (the B&M store is only open one day a week at the moment, and a lot of my Saturdays recently have been busy).

As for the inks, the only one I have is the Shadyside Walnut Street Brown (which I like a lot, BTW). Someone at a SCN meeting awhile back had the Schenley Park Thicket Green, which also looked interesting, but I don't use green inks a lot. The last time I was in there, I picked up a TWSBI 580-AL in pink, and three bottles of De Atramentis ink.

Oh, wow -- they have some NEW colors.... Looks like I know what I may be doing on Saturday morning.... Going "Nick! I thought I was on the mailing list!"

Thanks for posting the link. And, well, not.... :wallbash:

edited because of some weird error message (I had been trying to post this about a half hour or so and my computer suddenly went all horribly pear-shaped); apparently there was some issue with the DNS and I couldn't talk to ANY website (not even Apple's). I had copied the post text and saved it to a file on my computer and that included the smiley, and it wouldn't let me paste it back in with the smiley -- but when I deleted it and then clicked on the smiley link I had no trouble pasting it.

(Apparently it's now time for my standard rant about how my 1937 Vac Shadow Wave cost a fraction of my laptop, is more ergonomic and environmentally friendly, doesn't need constant upgrades, fits in my pocket, hasn't had maintenance or flushing out since I got it, is prettier, and works when the power is out....)

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Wait, Ms Ruth, don't forget, "it also, doesn't have a dashboard light that tells you when to flush or fill it!"

Well this seemed like a good deal (who doesn't like free ink)? So I jumped on it. I'm getting the Point Park Fountain Tourquoise as the free ink and then decided since I had not tried any of these inks to add two more. Also getting PA railroad boiler steam blue and Andrew Carnegie Steel Blue. Love the effort that went into naming all of these inks.

It took me all night to decide whether I try new shades (like the Alternator Crimson and the Infield Brown) or whether I try shades that are close to colors I already like to compare to inks I already enjoy, like Incline Station or Walnut St. Brown to Diamine Oxblood or Franklin Christoph Terra Firma, or Point Park Fountain to Sailor Jentile.

I went with different-ish shades -- the Alternator Crimson looks like nothing I've seen before-- the Swab on Birmingham's website just looks like a mess of shading and sheening, while the swatch on the Everything Calligraphy site looks more like a smoky crimson color. I added Honus Wagner Infield Brown, as I don't really have any deep browns like that, and Cooking Coal Black, because it looks like there's some interesting sheening in there, too. I don't often use black inks, but maybe I'll like an interesting one.

Should be fun, and Ruth, I hope you get to the B&M store soon to get a few more colors so you can do some reviews! :)

Recieved an email today saying my order shipped from the promo TWSBI ink combo. Once the package arrives, I'll report back

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
