Pelikan 400, Grey Or Green

I've just bought this set, while it is quite sure that the pencil is grey, I am a little bit uncertain about the fountain pen, is the color grey or green?

By the way the fountain pen should be a 400N, is it confirmed?

Funny, I was outbid on this set at the very last minute ... happy to see that it went to a fellow FPN member.

I do think that it is the not so common grey version of the 400N.

So congratulations with this acquisition!

Yup, the pen is a 400N (rounded end of the piston knob). Vintage Pelikans came in a wide array of greens and greys (with greens being the most prevalent ones).

That said, the binde on the fountain pen is definitely grey (with a slight greenish tint) instead of green, I think what throws our perception off is comparing it side by side with the pencil (which is more true/neutral grey).

I do find it rather lovely actually, reminds me of the sea. Would love to have one of those. :)

Thank you, I was very determined with this auction, so as my maximum bid was quite larger than the final price, so you was not outbid of few pounds.

It was on my watch list also; I add stuff to my list just to see how much they end up going for.

Do you have a semi-flex or a maxi-semi-flex?..........................in I hope you didn't get a hard H nib or the Nails Nail D nib. The last one is good for sticking in cliff walls when climbing the north face of the Eiger or opening battle tanks.

I will let you know when the pen arrives, for now I'm waiting its shipping.

Anyway, after some research, looking the double vent-hole, I think that the nib is a type D nib (for carbon copy), so as it should be very stiff.

Really nice colour combination on that one! Looks grey with a green tinge to me.

I have one of those D nibs, it was on a pen in a lot at a live auction. Had the pen been stand alone, I'd not waved my number at all. It is the stiffest of all nails I have.

Well, look on our Sales Section, there must be someone selling a '50-65 semi-flex nib...if not there is Penboard.de.

I like semi-flex a lot, that and maxi-semi-flex.

You can use this picture as a reference if you like. Most likely a grey :)

Pen and pencil arrived, and they are grey.

Here a comparison photo (new pen is the second from left).

P.S. The nib is a Df nib, so as it is quite stiff.

Felicitations, Alfredo! Lovely pen (I'd be on the lookout for a nice, flexible nib now, myself!) and it is the very first 400 in grey that I have seen: I always thought that the 100s were the really colourful ones and that 400s came only in green, tortoise and black...so thank you for proving me wrong. Grazie, signore.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
