3Rd Pen Help

I currently own 2 149's both from the 80's 1 is extra fine ( gives nice line variation) the other is a standard Medium .

I'm looking to obtain my 3rd possibly a stub nib for the variation but I'm worried that the edges could be an issue are oblique nibs more forgiving in this respect ?

The stub should not be an issue, it has little flex and rounded edges. Half way between a round nib and an italic.

Quoted to add punctuation and have it be easier to read.

As for the nib: it depends on your handwriting methods.. Do you tend to rotate pens as you write?

IF your writing needs modifying, are you willing to learn?

Round nibs, oblique and italics (Formal, cursive and stubs) all are different and produce different effects for different writing.

My way of exploring into them was through buying inexpensive pens with stub nibs.

Thankyou I try not to rotate my nib when writing. As for trying pens/nibs sadly their are few options available where I live . The local Montblanc shop is over 2 hours away.

Buying secondhand used might be an idea, if the nib doesn't work you can sell it on for minimal loss.

Buy another 149 with a B or BB nib and you will get line variation. Oblique nibs don't give you extra line variation, they just change the direction of it, making it more diagonal vs horizontal and vertical.

Was edging toward a B . As a natural progression from my Medium . Hopefully at the next UK penshow there will be a nice 149 with a Broad nib .

Go big or go home. Moving from M to B runs the risk of no discernible difference. BB is suggested, but OBBB is recommended. 😎

Good plan...

Always try before you buy.

You might even be enchanted by an OBBB nib that crosses your path. I know experienced fountain pen users who have no use for oblique nibs and others swear by them.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
