Dear Pen Pals,

Bonhams is having our latest Fine Writing Instruments sale in Los Angeles on June 12th. The preview is on June 9th, 10th and 11th, and I'd love to meet some of you there!

The sale catalog is at the printer and will ship any day now. I'd like to offer the first 20 respondents a free copy of the catalogue (a $35 value). Please PM me.

The sale features both vintage and modern limited writing instruments, including some very rare pens. Here is a link to a pdf of the print catalogue:

MB Picasso 18K White Gold Fountain Pen, limited to 39

MB Picasso 18K Yellow Gold Fountain Pen, limited to 91

MB Brandenburger Tor, limited to 89

MB White House, limited to 43

MB Fortune Number, limited to 88

MB Pompidou, limited to 77

MB Magical Black Widow, limited to 88

As well as dozens of other MB Special Editions. There are also dozens of MB Writers Edition and Patron of Art pens. Almost all of these have attractive estimates set below the original retail values.

The sale includes a selection of vintage pens, including a rare Parker No. 39 Gold-Filled Lucky Curve pen set with turquoise and other stones, c.1910. Few of these pens survive, and this example appears to be the only one offered at auction since October, 2000 (the example offered in 2000 was sold by Bonhams for over $18,000; the current example is offered with an estimate of $8000-10,000).

Of special interest is an extensive offering of vintage and modern Japanese lacquer pens, including a selection of extraordinary Namikis. The sale highlight is a very rare "A-Grade" Dunhill-Namiki Emperor Portuguese Trade Ship Maki-e fountain pen in flawless condition, c.1931 (estimate: $100,000-150,000).

In addition to these pricey gems, there are quite a few pens offered with modest estimates and low reserves, including a few tantalizing group lots of Montblanc Bohemes, Meisterstucks, and other pens. If any of you have questions, feel free to PM me!

Cheers,

Ivan

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
