I'll recommend a pen-paper-ink combo for under 1000 rupees that works like a charm.

For paper, Classmate Pulse notebooks, which run for round 150 rupees for a 300 page notebook.

For Ink, buy Waterman Blue or Black (or any other color you like) for around 400 rupees.

For the pen, get the Jinhao X450/X750/Shark/51A in a Medium or Fine nib for 400-450 rupees.

And there you have it! This combo has withstood the struggles of an engineering student in India, so it will not disappoint you!

Can you check, whether your notes are fading ? Jinhoa X750 is a decent pen.But It is a heavy pen and it may have quality control issues sometimes. I would suggest, a beginner must go with safe Indian pens (3 in 1) rather than Chinese. The reliability of my ASA daily is astonishing. I am impressed with Bril ink. It is an excellent cheap ink. It's only problem, It fades !

I haven't seen any fading with the inks I've used.

And I agree, ASA pens are far better, but they're super hard to come by these days.

@vineetkgiri I have not seen any fading in Bril royal blue ink. Can you please let me know under what conditions you see it fading (so that i may avoid that)?

I have been using a Kanwrite Desire for the past 4 months, initially with a flex nib and later on with a regular medium tip nib. I use it with cartridges and hv a spare cartridge in the pen itself, and it is the only pen I take to work everyday.

For a flex nib Heritage is the right choice. Heritage with a regular nib is a heavy duty pen , else you could consider an ASA or a Gama ebonite. They are heavy duty pens.

What cartridge do you use with the Kanwrite desire? And does it take the international Long cartridge.

If it's the plastic feed version, then it takes any standard international cartridge...  Short or long(except for a twsbi cartridge, because it's thicker than normal)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
