Shipping / Customs Clearance. Japan To India

I just ordered ink from rakuten website. It seems order has been processed and ink will be dispatched soon. I want to know if the ink straightaway reaches me through post. It will be dispatched through Japan EMS with tracking (not small shipment). If so, how is customs paid? If not, who pays the customs and gets customs clearances?

Anyone with experience in this matter please let me know what to expect. So that I prevent any impending problems.

Thanks

Hi,

I received a shipment of Sailor inks (five bottles) from Rakuten a few days ago. No customs charged even though the parcel did spend two days at the customs office, which made me extremely nervous!

The Rakuten purchase was my fourth or fifth purchase from a Japanese seller and Japan EMS is quite reasonable. I have generally received the order within five days after I got the shipping notice with the tracking number from the seller. Perhaps add a day or two more to that as I see you're from Bangalore, so that requires further shipping to the south (I currently live in Delhi). Customs clearance is handled by the imports and exports office on the basis of the invoice that the seller will add to the parcel. Unlike FedEx shipping, you won't have to submit any additional documents (at least that has been my experience). Charges, if any, are to be paid to the postman who will come for delivery. The generally don't accept cheques, so be prepared to pay in cash.

Do be warned that customs can fluctuate wildly and I have paid between 5% to 42%. It's weird and very vexing to have such a vast scale. There have also been a few times when I wasn't charged any customs, which genuinely feels like a small victory in itself.

You can track through JapanPost and IndiaPost, it's usually quite accurate.

I hope this helps, and good luck with customs!

Thanks for reply Sakshi. Another query - there is no change in the status of consignment on Japan Post website. This is since two days back when I got the shipping notice along with the Japan Post tracking number. What does that mean? Is the consignment moving or is it stuck somewhere?

Thanks again.

It means the item is in transit to India. The tracking update when the parcel is scanned at different points in the transit. You can see the update in India post website or in the IPS web tracking site using the tracking number. The next update will be when it reaches India at the concerned FPO.

It depends on what the status is. In all probability, Viju is right and your shipment is in transit. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi

How was the experience with customs?

I am also planning to buy some inks.

Regards

It was great. Reached me in exactly a week. I was able to track throughout. And there was no duty.

I think you are probably safe if you order below 2000/- including shipping. Will be happy to buy on Rakuten again if I need something from Japan.

well some japan post offices do not accept ink bottles so you are lucky as long as the customs declaration is that its gift the rs 10000 value is exempt from customs

if your seller doesnt mark it as gift and undervalue it less than 10000 rupees you may have to pay customs

HI All

I have bought a Pilot Namiki Metal Falcon($187+$16). It is comming through EMS. What will be the expected duty for it? And how I have to pay the same. This is my first import, I do not have any idea of Gift clause, I think this Item is above gift range.

See the response in your other post. I think the limit for gifts is Rs.20000/ though not able to lay my hands on the notification. Rs. 10000 is what the limit of 1993 notification states.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
