Omaezaki No Yu-Yake (Sunset) Sailor Bungbox

Sailor is my favourite ink maker (ex-aeque with J. Herbin). Sadly their most interesting inks are available only in Japan or from internet retailers. There are few japanese shops famous for their wide and interesting range of Sailor inks. One of most well-known is Bung Box. A lot of people were taken by interesting bottles and intriguing colors. It seems however that recently many ink enthusiasts started to shy away from this line since Bung Box inks became much more bitterly expensive than other Sailor inks.

The line consists of quite a few colors. My list is incomplete and most of the names aren't translated well. If you have full list of BB inks and/or could help me with correcting english names, help me sort this out :)

  1. 4B Blue/Black
  2. BB Espresso
  3. Dandyism
  4. Ebisu Gold

Before I write few words about the ink allow me to start by saying thank you mmg122 for sending me samples of different inks.

Omaezaki Sunset is too red to be called an orange but in the same time it's not red enough to be called true red. Also, if you'll look closely, you'll see some pinkish accents. It's rather unusual color but I wouldn't call it pretty. I just don't feel it.

Apart from that ink behavior is reasobable. It lacks any useful water resistance but it's, I think, its only drawback.

Thank you for reviewing this ink Vis, I really like using Sunset; there's a softness to the colour that's unusual in such a bright shade. It doesn't have the "glare" that some of the saturated red-oranges exhibit.

The underlying pinky-coral is very pretty: it reminds me of geranium flowers. I like using this ink for titles/headings, as a contrast to cool grey text.

That Sunset is pretty alright. I fell in love with Amanita muscaria though. I wish they would make that again.

This is a long-time favorite. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for the review- to me, the splash looks best: it loses something when written compared to the splash. I had just looked at the review of Papier Plume Garden District Azalea before seeing this, and I think that is influencing my impression. That ink appears a good bit less saturated, and shades more from what I can see.

I love the color of this ink. On my monitor, Vis' first Leuchturm sample is closest to what I see; the splash and the first Rhodia are next closest.

I don't find it to be particularly dry, but then again, I use it for EDC, including markup, and appreciate a quicker dry time. It does do very well on office ("multipurpose") paper.

It's the first (and so far only) ink I've purchased a second, backup bottle for. If it were at all water-resistant it would be perfect.

Thank you Vis for another great review. You have no idea how much I appreciate your reviews. While I may not necessarily agree with your color tastes, I appreciate the excellent and unbiased reviews that you write!

Actually I think the got the name correct on this. It is a beautiful sunset color. I love the Bungbox colors I just can't justify the high price here in the U.S. Perhaps if I get a longer layover in Tokyo, I can go to one of the great pen stores and pick some up at a better price.

Thanks Vis for another great review. JM, I wouldn't have thought that this would be a color for, but I'm not surprised Migo and DrPen like it. I'm with you, Vis, this one doesn't sing to me like the others.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
