How To Be Slick On Amazon

So if they're smart enough to offer you discounts and deals on the items you've been looking at, why aren't they smart enough to know when to quit.

I bought a computer on Amazon on Wednesday, and I'm still getting emails like... Are you still interested in? ... or You might like this....

Too much data can be a bad thing... and a waste of time for both of us.

They're smart enough to make offers on the things you've been looking at, but they're not smart enough to know when to stop.

I bought a computer from Amazon last Wednesday, but I'm still getting ads and offers from them on computers. What a waste.

I honestly don't understand how Amazon works.

The price is NEVER the same during checkout than what it's list price is. It's always, ALWAYS higher. Usually high enough for the item to not be worth buying anymore.

Shipping is never estimated correctly and is always much higher during checkout.

When I was buying a Microsoft Surface Pro laptop, there were some sellers with 1 sale selling the laptop for much lower price than anyone else. So I randomly clicked the third seller, which was about 100€ more than the first two, but the third seller was actually Amazon and it included a free keyboard which I wanted to buy anyway, but the keyboard itself was worth 150€, so that was the best price which I would never see had I not clicked every seller individually.

I hate buying from Amazon. It's a nightmare, an unintuitive GUI, completely misleading with prices and almost never good deals can be had there. Plus, I have to check every seller to sure it's not a scam, because Amazon seems to let third party sellers sell fakes or never sell stuff at all. Sure, I will probably get my money back if it's a scam, but why would I credit some random people from the world in advance? This is like getting a money loan without interest rates.

I usually get stuff by the 204.5 rule: The seller needs to have at least 200 reviews that are 4.5 stars or higher. Anything else, even if it looks legit, I don't trust. I up the stakes when it comes to expensive stuff like my Lamy 2000 which I bought on an affiliation link from Pen Addict or something.

Oh and by the way, I was typing the previous post when an ad for a Pernambuco wood cello bow showed up on the right-hand side. 50% off. The same one I had on my watchlist one day ago. I went there and I noticed the price went up. Strange, huh? Guess why that ad is there? :D

Wow, I would have gone for that! My bargain Amazon buy, which I still can't quite believe as it hasn't arrived yet, is a TWSBI Eco, clear with stub nib, for £7.99. Including postage from the U.S.!

Yep, was too good to be true. The pen never arrived, new seller started getting only negative feedback. Watch out for David Imes and avoid ... At least Amazon say they've refunded me, instantly.

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

You need to embrace the technology. I like to drop by the library and do a few fun searches then walk away...

San Francisco International Pen Show - The next “Funnest Pen Show” is on schedule for August 23-24-25, 2024.  Watch the show website for registration details.

My PM box is usually full. Just email me: my last name at the google mail address.

But surely the iT people at a library would have the browser set to delete all cookies at each logoff?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
