Hello From An Unusually Wet Ne Nevada...

I can't recall if I said hello, yet, so pardon me if it's a duplicate.

I began with a Jinhao X-750, but it was too heavy & big for my hands & it now lives with a friend.

Having slowly worked my way through a few "beginner" pens, I've discovered I hate Lamys & how they fit my hand & that I'm going to have to pick up a bit of micro mesh & a loupe. He he

As an early Mother's Day gift, I indulged in a TWSBI Diamond 580 AL, in silver. There is no drag as I found w the Lamy pen, & it writes in such a way that my heart glows... THIS is what writing is all about!

While I'm aware that there are many more expensive pens that might thrill me even more, I'm not out to break the bank. I'd love to find a nice flexy vintage pen or nib that would fit on of my other pens, but I just love the feel of the pens in my hand & the feel of good paper, a leather Journal cover, & beautiful inks.

My teenage love affair with dip pens & an occasional fountain pen, is back, with a vengeance.

It's lovely to know I'm not alone with my obsession. Jenn

Welcome to FPN!

The Jinhaos are inexpensive, but if you find one that fits your hand, you can get a better nib from Goulet that writes more smoothly. That said, I have the 580 AL and I use it regularly; its a smooth writer and has just enough feedback to let you know it's writing.

What inks have you purchased? Once you find a couple nice writers, the ink rabbit hole is cheaper than pens and gives a lot of variety.

Thank you for the warm welcome!

Renee, I find my Diamond 580 to be so light & smooth, on good paper, it's like writing on air. Unless someone drops a Holy Grail pen into my lap, I think I'll be collecting different colors of the 580.

As for inks, I've been trying to alternate w a new tea one month (from India or China) & a new ink, another, unless I hit a good deal ...

I have de Atramentis: Sahara Grey & purple-violet; Pilot Iroshizuku: syo-ro, fuyu gaki, & ama-iro (the Summer release in little bottles?); & Diamine: Apple Glory.

I'm looking into getting some Sheening inks for the 580 Medium nib, as it loves to lay it down! Apache Sunset is a must have, I know, but what else is in that category?

Does anyone have a good suggestion for the Nemosine Singularities in ink? I find them rather dry. One has a Goulet stub nib, while the other is an EF or a F. I must get a loupe. (I have new glasses waiting & well get them, Monday. This will be a rather large change, but it will be lovely to read fine print, again!)

Welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell. For flex nibs you still can't do better than the dip pens.

Welcome, Jenny !

You found "the pen". I was worth the effort. Enjoy your TWSBI 580  .

The Nemos are VERY dry! Just keep them far away from Pelikan inks. ;)

Sailor Jentle inks (in general) have good flow and great colors; the Waterman line is well-behaved. Ditto for some Diamine inks. If you'd like a few samples, let me know, and welcome aboard!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Greetings and welcome!

Thank you for the welcome, everyone.

It's so nice to have found people who don't look at my pens & say, "oh, you got a pen." As if I'd gotten a cabbage or something! LOL

Oh, well. Not everyone can be as discerning as we are!😉😉

I'd love a sample of a WET ink for my Nemosines. Please contact me off list!

Has anyone had to adjust the feeds? Just the thought makes me nervous. LOL

While both the Lamy Al Star & the TWSBI 580 have smooth nibs, writing with the Al Star feels like the pen is sluggish, somehow, & doesn't enjoy writing. Anthropocentric Alert! -G-

I hope to learn tons from everyone.

I'm really loving the inks I've acquired, so far. I asked for a good beginning ink, can't remember what I got... a black, perhaps. I gave it away, along w the Jinhao x750.

I adore purples & greens; I'm looking for a FP equivalent of a shiny calligraphic black, so dark & shiny that it appears to stand at attention 100 yrs later. Obviously, I'm NOT going to use a calligraphy ink like that in a FP! There may be no such thing in FP land... Jennifer

Hello and welcome for FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
