Ink Bottle Triage - The Horror Of Mailing Ink

I went to the Atlanta show and bought way too much ink. There was no chance TSA was going to let me fly it all home, so I very carefully bubble-wrapped it all and shipped it. It arrived at my office today & there were some...issues, the worst of which resulted in this:

Some of my coworkers suggested just throwing away the ink - clearly they don't understand how this works. Fortunately, I was able to find an empty glass bottle and salvage a good portion of the ink. :)

That's weird. I have shipped around 100 bottles of KWZ ink without a single problem. I cannot image what kind of torture was inflicted to your bottle.

I think it had to do with a lot pressure changes from it being flown/shipped too many times that caused the seal between the cap and the bottle to fail. There were leaks with a few other bottles/brands, but that one was the worst. I don't think it was KWZ's fault at all; there were 3 other KWZ bottles that were fine.

Next time you ship ink, you might want to wrap some tape around the cap and bottle, the way I've gotten my KWZI bottles shipped to me without incident. Same with the Krishna bottles just in from India: they were wrapped around with tissue paper and a rubber band, and then put into ziplock baggies two each, no spillage. There was also lots of bubble wrap.

Good advice. There was plastic wrap around it, which is what kept it from being even worse & how I was able to rescue about 75% of it. I'm not sure if the plastic wrap was put on by Vanness or by KWZ, but it definitely helped. I did use lots of bubble wrap, but I didn't think about tape.

And now I'm curious about the Krishna inks. :)

There is a thread on one of the fora where they are looking for a US distributor. And here is the website of the manufacturer: www.krishnainks.com.

I bought mine via fountainpenindia.com, but it was a bit of a hassle for them to find a way to ship them...

I've now tried two of the six I ordered, and one I find so-so, a nice ink but I wouldn't go for all that trouble again, but the second one... wow. I'm very happy with that one. The colors are very vibrant and the ink behaves well. If they had a shop on the island I would be a regular visitor. Too bad they're all the way on the other side of the world...

Julia, At my first pen show, I took with me some Akkerman inks that I was delivering to FPNers who participated in the group buy. Plistumi got the airport and TSA refused to allow her to travel with the ink. Here was here response.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

That can't have tasted good.

I try to avoid unnecessary interaction with TSA; I almost always end up having my carry on bags searched. I think its because I'm usually going to and from smaller airports, so things like fountain pens and camera gear are scary/interesting.

Last summer, I had an agent tell me I had too many items in my bag; not too many bags to carry-on, just too many items in my bag. Before I could think, I told him that wasn't a real thing; he insisted that it was & since I'd already started digging the hole, I just kept going by explaining that while the TSA could search any bag for any reason, there was not a rule, statutory or regulatory, stating nor limiting the number of items one could pack in a single bag. It was a good thing I arrived early.

Another time I was traveling with quite a bit of camera gear & the screener made me take each lens, put it on each camera body, and demonstrate that that combination worked. If I remember, I think I had 3 bodies and 9 lenses. Oddly, I was violating the regulation about the number of Lithium batteries a passenger can have, but he never mentioned them & neither did I.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
