Talk Me Out Of Buying A Montblanc 149

Wolverine

Recommended Posts

I am about to purchase a Montblanc 149. It will be from the Montblanc store. I figure I would use it as a workhorse. I could just get a much cheaper Faber-Castell E-Motion Fountain Pen in Dark Brown Pearwood as a workhorse or even pick up one of the less pricier Karas Kustoms Barstocks Fountain pens to use as a workhorse, but I think I like the Montblanc 149 more. Talk me out of buying a Montblanc 149.

Hi,

Where in Canada are you?

Have you written with a 149 for extended periods?

Knowing if the 149 is comfortable for you is an incredibly important consideration. It's quite a large pen. That said, if the size works for you go for it. I did, and I don't regret it. I bought mine new because I wanted a very specialized nib, and it's blown me away.

"Oh deer."

I have not written with one for extended periods. I tried out a 146 and wrote with it for about 15 minutes. The 149 seemed to be a better size. I actually thought that the 146 seemed kinda small.

Cool. Yeah that's it really. I have smallish hands for a guy, so the 146 is my jam.

Let me know if you're shopping in MTL. I have a place that might be a better option than the MB store.

You're asking in a place/community where many members own 5 or 8 or 12 MB 149s at any point hehe

Go for it! I think every gentleman should own at least 1 :)

149 is not all that big, and the lightness of the pen makes it quite comfortable to write with. Like Pravda has said, just buy one (or two or 3 or 9). It is a pen that you won't regret buying.

Yes yes, it is just another montblanc pen one might say and it is true that it is common but the advertisement phrase for another product (despite 149's relatively lower value) I think better suits the MB 149:

“You never actually own a XXX – you merely look after it for the next generation"

LOL.

149 is just that much bigger than a 146 to make a diff for my large hand (11 inches from thumb to pinkie span)

the 146 cap unposted digs into the webbing between my thumb and index finger, dealbreaker

the 149 posted allows me to hold it by the posted cap and without much pressure write far far away from the page, the only oversized I can do this with.

If you buy it from on of the preferred authorized dealers Europe you can still get the full warranty, any nib size, and pay less. I cannot speak for Canadian custom fees, but in the US the savings is maybe 30 to 40% off buying in a store. It's not like they let you ink one up to try before anyhow.

What i would really recommend is to buy a gently used one from here or another enthusuast site. You will pay a lot less and yet still get almost the exact same experience. If you want an EF or BB or O3B nib then it will be a little harder to buy used so new might make more sense.

But if you walk into a bar at 2 PM, the patrons there are not the ones to ask about how to avoid drinking alcohol.

If you want less blah, blah, blah and more pictures, follow me on Instagram!

That phrase justified quite a few purchases I have made of that brand, I tell my wife: it's for our son hehe

I don't know what to say. I started with one 149 now I own three and I use them every day.

Writing with a 149 is a form of psychotherapy for me.

I just made my first job offer to someone on behalf of my organization (feels good!).

And I signed my name with a 149 in nice juicy Montblanc Toffee Brown ink and a large signature.

I say go for it.

I you will want mutltiples. There! i did my best. wink

I have a fine, a medium and a broad nib for now. Montblanc Boutiques will let you try different nib sizes to help you choose the right one to start with.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
