Tooled Leather Bound Journal Help!

Hi

I'm having difficulty finding leather bound journals with pages that are fountain pen friendly. As most of these leather journal makers I've put enquiries into don't use paper that accepts all writing mediums. 95-99% of the journals I have enquired about use paper that aren't suitable for fountain/calligraphy pen ink for whatever reason. Mostly feathering and bleeding through the paper. Or have no idea how the ink reacts with their paper at all.

I'm almost tempted to try and make my own. However, I have never worked with leather before nor know the first thing about working with it. On top of which I'd also have to purchase said leather and all the tools required to make my journal......

I was told you may be able to help

I'd love something tooled if at all possible and with a lock of some kind. As I have a few ideas in that regard from my browsing. Celtic designs as well as made to look like your ye olde books you'd find in an old mansion library complete with one of said books being a "handle" to open up a secret passage way. Yep. I'm a huge nerd for those kinds of things XD

Oberon Designs does beautiful Hand Tooled Notebooks. Celtic Designs are one of their specialties. I'd suggest you find a Clairefontaine, Rhodia or Tomoe Notebook of the size and FP Friendly you prefer. Contact Oberon Design and see which of their covers will accommodate said notebook. Then as you fill one notebook, it comes out of the cover is stored and a new notebook is inserted in the cover. Usual disclaimers apply, no affiliation, or relationship with Oberon , other than a very satisfied customer. Let us know what worked out for you.

I also use Oberon Design. A number of composition notebooks have passed through my composition notebook cover version and it still looks new. Highly recommended.

Levenger paper isn't great, but their bomber leather covers are nice, and you can choose different disks. They also sell punches you can use to punch your own paper to fit they system. Toss the couple sheets that come with it or use them for testing or whatever, and punch up a pack of your favorite FP-friendly paper.

Leatherology also makes journals and covers of various kinds.

I received a paper sample with my last order from Innovative Journals. Not anything close to an extensive test but it was friendly with the couple of pens I tried.

The diificult part is finding the leather cover, especially if you want something specific and elaborate.

Have you considered buying one of these, removing the paper and simply replacing it with your own paper. There are a number of youtube vids showing you how to make or stitch your own fauxdori.

The above journal use thin strips of leather to hold the paper which would probably be quite difficult for you, a simpler alternative would be to use garden twine.

I made enquiries about making my own, there were a number of problems which included sourcing 3mm leather and high cost, it made Midoris look like bargain basement.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
