What Is The Coolest Material For A Fountain Pen Body?

Wolverine

Recommended Posts

In your view, what is the coolest material for a fountain pen body?

Is it Titanium? Aluminum? Brass? Delrin? Chrome with wood? Basic resin? Carbon fiber? Stainless steel? Ceramic?

Do you own any pens made of this cool material?

Hi Wolverine,

Sorry to be contrarian, but for me; it's none of the above. For me, it's celluloid... and yes, I have a Bexley and a couple others made of the stuff. :)

Coming in a very, very close second or tie... would be the Makrolon Lamy uses on the 2K.

My runner-up or honorable mention would be ebonite... I have several Indian pens made of it.

JUST TO ADD: I like these materials because they possess a "warmth"; a unique and tangible tactile feeling in the hand... it's hard to describe, but when you hold them, it's as though you become one with the pen. :)

No idea what a cool material might be? Are you talking about feel?

Ice. Sadly, there's a known problem with material shrinkage, especially in warmer climates.

But that's not as cool as grass!! Seriously, if there could be some accurate way to replicated the soft, warm touch of a natural object, that material would be killer. Celluloid is awesome, yes, but it won't last forever. Lucite is impressive, but makes the pen look and feel like a Parker 51, (not always a bad thing). If a material could be as versatile as the the ones used on Conway Stewart, but could posses the bulletproof capabilities of Lucite, then that material would be killer indeed.

Wouldn't a pen made of amber be fantastic! Maybe even have bugs in it.

Have you seen the Graf von faber-castell pen of thr year for 2004? I has amber segments, though no bugs a la Jurassic Park walking canes.

The colors and patterns of the vintage pens are great.

Diamond. How else can you show how cool you are than with a cool bling pen? It doesn't have to write. But bling.

You could use Vonnegut's ice-nine. Solid at room temperature.

One with the whole barrel made of white Ivory would be killer.

That would have to be a vintage pen carved into it's current form before 1947.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
