Writing At An Angle

Retro-user

Recommended Posts

I more often these days find myself writing in bed, at an angle, with pad of paper 45 degrees or so. I could use a pencil, or a felt tip pen, but I'm looking for ballpoints that can write under such circumstances. They will write a couple of lines, but gravity takes its toll sooner or later, and I find the ink flow stops before I can finish a paragraph.

I'm aware of the Fisher Space Pen (which has garnered mixed reviews), but I wonder if any other manufacturers offer "pressurized" refills? I recall Papermate used to make a Powerpoint refill years ago, but that seems to have been discontinued. Any thoughts?

Hi, I can think of several refills that are pressurized, Diplomat Spacetech, Pilot Downforce and Uniball Powertank.

One point to look out for with these, is that some of these refills will only fit that pen, and refills may be not so easy to find.

It seems that the Diplomat version uses a Schmidt refill, which is in the 'Parker G2' style too.

You can buy the Schmidt 4889M Megaline refills online, so they would fit into any ballpoint that takes that very popular type of refill, e.g. Parker, Fisher, Stabilo, and many others.

There is also the Tombow AirPress, which as it name probably suggest, incorporates some sort of air pumping mechanism in the body of the pen. Unlike other pressurized ballpoints, it actually uses this pump to pressurize the "normal" refill.

I think the basic idea is actually quite interesting, but the downside is that the pen's not actually ideal for those who likes to repeatedly click the pens just for the fun of it, like myself, since it tends to make the ink leak due to the unnecessary pressure. And I think it also only takes Tombow's proprietary refill which is very small.

I'm looking into the UniBall Powertank based on this feedback — seems afforbale and readily available.

If memory serves Caran d'Ache Goliath refills are pressurized. Have not let me down when writing in 'awkward' angles.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
