Hello, Varun, and welcome to the Fountain Pen Network. Glad you have joined us. You, having joined us, make us better. This is now your place as much as it is ours. Please don't be shy. Ask all the questions you have and don't hesitate to state your opinions. I hope you enjoy your time here.

Hello Varun, and welcome (officially) to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Pull up a stump...think about sitting around a camp fire. Stumps make great seats and since they are kinda round even little kids can move them around and re-purpose them for "King of the Mountain" or "Jump across the valley" . "Pull up a stump and set a spell" is a welcome I try to offer to all new members. "spell" is used in the old sense of an indefinite time period and "set" instead of sit says to put any load down, just relax.

The Talking Feather (or Talking Pipe or Talking Stick) was an American Indian discussion device. Whomever held the Talking Feather (or Talking Pipe or Talking Stick) got to speak without interruption. General custom said the others should look down and concentrate on what was being said. The Talking Feather then got passed to the next person who wished to speak.

Widdershins is "in a direction opposite to the sun", generally considered counter-clockwise. It is an old English, Irish and Scot tradition and considered bad luck.

Ohhh wow that is a really small sentence with giant meanings and words. Thats some nice.......umm....saying i think?(in hindi those kind of senences or poems are called dohe [pronounced as doh+ae] which are small sentences with big words and meanings) just learnt it today in school, what a coincidence! And thank you for describing the meaning of it.

Very interesting, Jar - I learnt a few new things today!

Here in South Africa, the Xhosa people use the word "Iziko" - which means, "the hearth, in the middle of the hut, around which the family/community gather to talk about things of common concern". A much larger group/discussion, with elders is referred to as an "Imbizo".

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
