I quit buying on the net some year and a half ago...buying in live auctions. I had been tending towards that for a while, but my Grail pen money burnt a hole in my pocket, and a flock of Pelikans followed me home.

That way I get to check the nib...often it's cheaper in mostly it's dealers bidding and they have got to make 1/3-1/2 on top of the price of the pen. I don't.

Some times there are no dealers there...so I can get for minimum set bid.

In normally there is always at least a written bid on MB's I got a near mint '70s-80 146 for E150 when there were no bids...an impulse buy, some two years ago. I'd checked it, 'true' regular flex nib of the times. I later checked the feed against Max's MB site and his feed dates.

Later MB went over to 'Springy' nibs, good tine bend but only 2 X tine spread, like my Woolf, bought on sale for 1/3 off at my B&M. They were going for the same price on the net. Had I not used that pen, after 4-5 years I could have sold it for the then new price of E750.....the dollar was much lower back then.

I spent my time in the Pen of the Week in the Mail Club....then the Pen of the Month Club....so have a fair amount of pens.

I do recommend the Pen of the Quarter Club, one gets a better pen, that is well researched.

Well - it's not in the mail - but as soon as Ryan gets done hammering and gluing the thing together I should have something like this headed my way:

After that I'll be visiting my favorite Montblanc boutique in Las Vegas in May - not sure what will come of that but I'm fairly certain I won't be leaving empty handed.

After that I may start saving up for retirement :)

Update: two nice ringtops. The Moore's a little scuffed-up but a nice nib - a needlepoint that flexes to about a Medium.

The Waterman's a red-ripple on the red side, which I think is pretty. I had to give it a good soak because it was full of blue-green ink. It's a wet, willing writer that I'd call a Fine semiflex. Working sacs on both, which makes them bargains.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
