Twsbi Crack? Or Am I Paranoid?

Being fairly new to TWSBI fountain pens (I've had my 580 for a couple weeks now), I've read about the cracking problems and had hoped that it was mainly a problem with the older models and that I wouldn't experience any issues.

Then, yesterday, I noticed what looks like it could be a crack forming in the threads on the inside of the cap. Is this somewhere TWSBIs have been known to crack? Is that what's happening here, or am I crazy? I've definitely not over tightened the cap, and I only posted the pen once or twice when I first got it (quickly deciding that was pointless).

Either way, I am thankful that if it is a problem (and I can really only see it being a problem if it gets worse; right now, even if it is a crack, it can't be seen except by looking inside the cap, and isn't affecting the function of the pen) it sounds like TWSBIs customer service is good about taking care of this sort of thing. I do love using this pen, and I even have my second TWSBI (a Mini with a 1.1 mm stub nib) on its way.

My 580's cap looks just like yours, same spot too.

Perhaps it could it just be a seam from manufacturing to help install the metal cap band?

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I had thought the same thing, that it might just be a seam in the plastic there, although if it were, I thought it seemed a little odd that it only goes about halfway up the threads. There is a seam, much thinner/less noticeable, that runs from the bottom of the threads up behind the clip, about 90° from the location of the spot I photographed.

I figure for now I'm just going to let it be and keep an eye on it. If it is a crack and it grows, I'll contact TWSBI at that point.

Mine has that one too. Might just be mould line as there is one opposite of it.

Will keep an eye on mine too.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
